2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Gorgeous, premium design - the OnePlus 8 Pro uses a familiar soft-touch glass back, and an aluminium frame - the OnePlus 8 Pro shares the same core design ethos as the OnePlus 7 Pro
- On the front is a beautiful edge-to-edge display and a hole-punch selfie camera
- OnePlus's handy alert slider is still here, which enables you to quickly switch between silent, vibrate and sound-on modes
- With a rating of IP68, the OnePlus 8 Pro is protected against total dust ingress and submersion in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes
- The in-display fingerprint reader is quite accurate and works quickly
- A gorgeous 6.78-inch, QHD+ screen, with excellent viewing angles and what looks like spot-on colour reproduction - the display offers an industry-leading 1300 nits peak brightness
- OnePlus has bumped up the refresh rate to 120 Hz which results in smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, overall providing a more premium experience - you can even use the 120 Hz at QHD+ resolution, unlike it's Samsung counterpart
- When it comes to video playback, content can be enhanced further with two additional settings - 'Vibrant colour effect pro' optimises the colours and contrast in videos to provide a more vibrant picture - 'Motion graphics smoothing' increases the frame rate of the video for clearer and more smooth playback
- Overall, the OnePlus 8 Pro display is one of the best on a smartphone, at present
- OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android with a host of additional customisation
- Blistering performance from the Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset - with its 120Hz display, highly-optimised OxygenOS software, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks, the OnePlus 8 Pro feels like the fastest phone around
- Excellent quad-camera setup - consisting of a 48MP primary camera, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, an 8MP telephoto lens and a 5MP colour filter sensor
- Shots taken with the primary camera are sharp and well-exposed with plenty of details, dynamic range is quite good with true-to-life colours, and white balance is consistent with the scene
- The ultra-wide camera takes great shots as well, it pulls double duty and can shoot close-up macro photos as well - images shot with the ultra-wide lens have good details
- Image quality from the telephoto camera is pretty good, colours and white balance are mostly consistent with the other cameras - it lets you zoom up to 3x optically and 30x with a mix of digital zoom
- "Color filter camera" produces interesting images with its photo-chrome filter over the sensor (though, it feels more like a gimmick that normal people will hardly use)
- Lowlight performance is quite good and the ultra-wide camera can also be used to shoot Nightscape photos
- Portraits look pretty good, and the subject separation is on point - the portrait effect is quite convincing with smooth and silky bokeh around the subject
- The 16MP selfie camera is the same one used in the OnePlus 7 Pro - it takes great-looking selfies with excellent dynamic range and just the right amount of sharpness
- Portrait photos are quite good on the selfie camera as well - the subject separation is quite well
- Video recording looks great with detail and dynamic range - stabilisation is also excellent with the Super Steady mode
- Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, providing richer, deeper sound
- Very good battery life with the 4510 mAh battery - which is the biggest OnePlus has ever put in a handset, and larger than the power pack you'll find in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, Huawei P40 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro - it will comfortably last a full day on a single charge
- Excellent fast charging - OnePlus has upgraded its Warp Charge 30T charging, to get you from 0% to 50% in 23 minutes via a wired connection
- OnePlus has included fast wireless charging called Warp Charge 30 Wireless, and it takes you from 1% to 50% in 30 minutes (though, the faster charging can only be achieved with OnePlus wireless charger which costs extra)
- With the OnePlus 8 Pro, you get an unabashed flagship, with all the bells and whistles - powerful specs, an amazing display, fast wireless charging, and water resistance make the OnePlus 8 Pro a great alternative to the Galaxy S20 Plus, and it saves you thousands of rupees

- Elegant and attractive looks - the Nord has the same design language as OnePlus flagships, and the in-hand feel is excellent
- Front design is similar to some of the Oppo and Realme phones with its dual punch-hole selfie camera
- The flat panel makes it significantly easier to use the phone with single hand
- The in-display fingerprint sensor as well as the face unlock works very well, and all it needs is a quick tap to unlock the phone
- Bright, crisp 6.44-inch Super AMOLED display - the 90Hz display on the Nord is just as vibrant and fluid as the OnePlus 8 with punchy colours and excellent viewing angles
- The brightness levels are more than enough for any situation indoors while being enough for direct under-the-sun use
- The OxygenOS is delight to have at this price, it is one of the most thoughtful, simple and clean Android skins which arguably offers the best user experience at this price point
- Snappy and fluid performance from the new Snapdragon 765G - in regular use there's hardly any difference between the Nord and OnePlus 8, it feels as fast and responsive as it's more expensive sibling - heavy games like PUBG mobile and Asphalt 9 run at their highest setting without any issue or lag
- Good camera setup for the price - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera, 5MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro
- The primary camera is the same as the one on the OnePlus 8 and captures good detail and colours are really punchy and vibrant
- The ultra-wide camera captures does a good job with colours and HDR with expected weaker details than the primary camera
- The macro camera works decently well when there is a good amount of ambient light around the subject
- The portrait lens also does a decent job, creates good bokeh and brings out nice portrait shots
- Low-light photos turn out decent, given strong enough light sources around - for darker scenes, OnePlus offers a dedicated Night mode which can be quite effective in brightening up photos
- Very good dual selfie cameras, a 32MP primary and an 8MP ultra-wide - the primary camera captures very good details, skin tones look good, and HDR is handled well
- The ultra-wide front camera is a thoughtful addition which captures a lot wider scene for all your groupies
- Overall, OnePlus has accumulated a great set of cameras for the price, they need some more tuning which OnePlus is known to provide with future updates
- Very good battery life from the 4115 mAh battery - it can easily accommodate for a day and half worth of usage with light to moderate use at 90 Hz, switching to 60 Hz improves the battery even futher
- Very good fast charging with the provided 30W charger in the box - it is able to take the battery to around 93 per cent in an hour, which is fairly quick
- The OnePlus Nord ticks all the right boxes - you get a 90Hz AMOLED display, robust hardware, good set of cameras at the back and front, unmatched software experience, and 30W fast charging - OnePlus did a fantastic job distilling the essence of its flagships into the Nord, and the result is one of the best mid-range phones in 2020
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The OnePlus 8 Pro is a large handset, and many users will find that two hands are required to hold it securely
- There doesn't seem to be any 'palm rejection', which could be an issue while dealing with the extreme curved display and you might see frequent accidental touches
- Overall, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a great set of cameras, but they're still not on the same level as the best of the best like the iPhone's and the Pixel's
- However, if you want the very best smartphone photography experience, the iPhone 11 series and the S20 series are still the way to go
|
- The Nord has a plastic mid-frame which definitely affects its premium positioning
