2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Elegant and attractive looks - the Nord has the same design language as OnePlus flagships, and the in-hand feel is excellent
  • Front design is similar to some of the Oppo and Realme phones with its dual punch-hole selfie camera
  • The flat panel makes it significantly easier to use the phone with single hand
  • The in-display fingerprint sensor as well as the face unlock works very well, and all it needs is a quick tap to unlock the phone
  • Bright, crisp 6.44-inch Super AMOLED display - the 90Hz display on the Nord is just as vibrant and fluid as the OnePlus 8 with punchy colours and excellent viewing angles
  • The brightness levels are more than enough for any situation indoors while being enough for direct under-the-sun use
  • The OxygenOS is delight to have at this price, it is one of the most thoughtful, simple and clean Android skins which arguably offers the best user experience at this price point
  • Snappy and fluid performance from the new Snapdragon 765G - in regular use there's hardly any difference between the Nord and OnePlus 8, it feels as fast and responsive as it's more expensive sibling - heavy games like PUBG mobile and Asphalt 9 run at their highest setting without any issue or lag
  • Good camera setup for the price - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera, 5MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro
  • The primary camera is the same as the one on the OnePlus 8 and captures good detail and colours are really punchy and vibrant
  • The ultra-wide camera captures does a good job with colours and HDR with expected weaker details than the primary camera
  • The macro camera works decently well when there is a good amount of ambient light around the subject
  • The portrait lens also does a decent job, creates good bokeh and brings out nice portrait shots
  • Low-light photos turn out decent, given strong enough light sources around - for darker scenes, OnePlus offers a dedicated Night mode which can be quite effective in brightening up photos
  • Very good dual selfie cameras, a 32MP primary and an 8MP ultra-wide - the primary camera captures very good details, skin tones look good, and HDR is handled well
  • The ultra-wide front camera is a thoughtful addition which captures a lot wider scene for all your groupies
  • Overall, OnePlus has accumulated a great set of cameras for the price, they need some more tuning which OnePlus is known to provide with future updates
  • Very good battery life from the 4115 mAh battery - it can easily accommodate for a day and half worth of usage with light to moderate use at 90 Hz, switching to 60 Hz improves the battery even futher
  • Very good fast charging with the provided 30W charger in the box - it is able to take the battery to around 93 per cent in an hour, which is fairly quick
  • The OnePlus Nord ticks all the right boxes - you get a 90Hz AMOLED display, robust hardware, good set of cameras at the back and front, unmatched software experience, and 30W fast charging - OnePlus did a fantastic job distilling the essence of its flagships into the Nord, and the result is one of the best mid-range phones in 2020
  • Great looking, premium glass design, especially with the Luminous Black option (very similar to the Reno 2) - easily one of the best-looking phones out there, at present (along with its predecessor the Reno 10x Zoom) - it offers a masterclass in how to craft a premium smartphone at a not-so-premium price point - in fact, half of the experience of the Reno 2Z is in its looks and that's the part that satisfies you the most
  • The curved Gorilla Glass rear panel is smooth and feels solid to the touch - the best thing about the back of the Reno 2Z is that it is one seamless piece of glass without any camera bump - the vertical quad camera system sits underneath the glass, offering a clean and visually attractive look
  • The curved edges on the back also offer a nice grip
  • Much lighter and more manageable than the original Reno 10x Zoom
  • Oppo has located the selfie camera in a pop-up module which is different compared to the shark-fin module of the Reno 2 - this pop-up module is illuminated by lights on either side (similar to the Redmi K20 Pro) - and the Reno 2Z also offers the option to change the light colour, which is a neat touch
  • The on-screen fingerprint sensor is extremely snappy and slightly faster than the face unlock method, but both are equally reliable
  • Beautiful, bright 6.53-inch Dynamic AMOLED display - what you get is close-to-all-screen and no bezels except for a slim chin (giving you a very good 91.1% screen to body ratio)
  • The display itself looks very good with vivid colours, deep blacks and excellent viewing angles - brightness levels on the Reno 2Z are good too
  • The display is also great for watching videos and playing games - the edge-to-edge display offers a distraction-free experience
  • ColorOS continues to get more streamlined, and lighter, but still continues to offer some neat features such as a lockscreen magazine, Night Shield, Game Space, App cloner, and smart battery saving options
  • Good performance backed by a solid Helio P90 processor (similar to the Snapdragon 710) - the Reno 2Z can handle pretty much any task you throw at it, and is also a good smartphone to game on - even heavy games like PUBG run smooth
  • Good thermal control - it doesn't warm up easily even with long gaming times
  • Good set of quad cameras - in addition to a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor that supports EIS, the Reno 2Z also offers an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel monochrome lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor
  • The 48MP main camera can take good shots in daylight via its default 12MP pixel binning mode - Photos look sharp and colourful, and when HDR kicks in the dynamic range can get pretty wide, offering good contrast in tricky lighting conditions - AI scene detection does well too
  • The Night Mode ('Ultra Dark mode') works reasonably well - this long-exposure mode requires you to keep your hands still for a few seconds, allowing you to capture brighter shots with low noise - though you shouldn't expect Pixel 3 level performance here
  • The wide-angle lens also comes in handy if you want a different perspective
  • Portraits taken with the Reno 2Z are very good, and have good edge detection
  • The phone also holds up very well in the video department (especially in daylight) with the ultra steady mode kicking in to offer decent stabilisation
  • The 16-megapixel front camera will get you some nice-looking selfies in daylight (but not the sharpest or most-detailed)
  • Overall, the Reno 2Z cameras are pretty good for this price bracket
  • Very good speaker - even though the Oppo Reno 2Z comes with a single bottom-firing speaker, but it can easily match a phone’s sound with stereo speakers - the speaker produces really loud sound and bass levels are pretty good
  • The voice from the earpiece is also very loud for making calls, which is really nice, and something that a lot of modern smartphones do not pay enough attention to
  • Good battery life with a 4000mAh battery and a 1080p screen - you can expect up to 1.5 days of use
  • Also comes with some very fast VOOC 3.0 fast charging support and a 20W charging brick in the box - charge the device for an hour, and you'll be good to go for the day (you get up to 48 percent in 30 minutes and 88 percent in an hour)
  • If you are not too picky about having the best raw performance for your buck, the Oppo 2Z is a very good smartphone that especially impresses with its stunning looks and good cameras - if you do care about having the best performance however, you can look at the Redmi K20 Pro at a cheaper price, or the OnePlus 7 and Asus Zenfone 6Z at a slightly higher price
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The Nord has a plastic mid-frame which definitely affects its premium positioning
  • The glass however, is glossy this time around rather than matt finish, so expect to see some fingerprints and smudges as you go about your day, especially on the Luminous Black option
  • As expected, there is a fair amount of bloatware preinstalled on the device, including the UC Browser, NewsPoint, Dailyhunt, Helo, Paytm, Amazon, and Facebook apps - most can thankfully be uninstalled though
  • Having said that, it's not the fastest phone in the price bracket though, with Snapdragon 855 phones available at even lower price brackets in the likes of Redmi K20 Pro
