2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Elegant and attractive looks - the Nord has the same design language as OnePlus flagships, and the in-hand feel is excellent
- Front design is similar to some of the Oppo and Realme phones with its dual punch-hole selfie camera
- The flat panel makes it significantly easier to use the phone with single hand
- The in-display fingerprint sensor as well as the face unlock works very well, and all it needs is a quick tap to unlock the phone
- Bright, crisp 6.44-inch Super AMOLED display - the 90Hz display on the Nord is just as vibrant and fluid as the OnePlus 8 with punchy colours and excellent viewing angles
- The brightness levels are more than enough for any situation indoors while being enough for direct under-the-sun use
- The OxygenOS is delight to have at this price, it is one of the most thoughtful, simple and clean Android skins which arguably offers the best user experience at this price point
- Snappy and fluid performance from the new Snapdragon 765G - in regular use there's hardly any difference between the Nord and OnePlus 8, it feels as fast and responsive as it's more expensive sibling - heavy games like PUBG mobile and Asphalt 9 run at their highest setting without any issue or lag
- Good camera setup for the price - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera, 5MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro
- The primary camera is the same as the one on the OnePlus 8 and captures good detail and colours are really punchy and vibrant
- The ultra-wide camera captures does a good job with colours and HDR with expected weaker details than the primary camera
- The macro camera works decently well when there is a good amount of ambient light around the subject
- The portrait lens also does a decent job, creates good bokeh and brings out nice portrait shots
- Low-light photos turn out decent, given strong enough light sources around - for darker scenes, OnePlus offers a dedicated Night mode which can be quite effective in brightening up photos
- Very good dual selfie cameras, a 32MP primary and an 8MP ultra-wide - the primary camera captures very good details, skin tones look good, and HDR is handled well
- The ultra-wide front camera is a thoughtful addition which captures a lot wider scene for all your groupies
- Overall, OnePlus has accumulated a great set of cameras for the price, they need some more tuning which OnePlus is known to provide with future updates
- Very good battery life from the 4115 mAh battery - it can easily accommodate for a day and half worth of usage with light to moderate use at 90 Hz, switching to 60 Hz improves the battery even futher
- Very good fast charging with the provided 30W charger in the box - it is able to take the battery to around 93 per cent in an hour, which is fairly quick
- The OnePlus Nord ticks all the right boxes - you get a 90Hz AMOLED display, robust hardware, good set of cameras at the back and front, unmatched software experience, and 30W fast charging - OnePlus did a fantastic job distilling the essence of its flagships into the Nord, and the result is one of the best mid-range phones in 2020
|
- Charming, fresh rear design - the Realme 7 features a mirror-split design, which creates some interesting patterns when light hits it
- The front is identical to the Realme 6 with a hole-punch and thin bezels all around
- Even though it uses plastic for the frame and back panel, the Realme 7 feels well-built and sturdy
- Face unlock and the side-mounted fingerprint sensor are quick
- The Realme 7 gets the same large 6.5 inches IPS LCD as the 6 - it can get very bright, and colours are nicely saturated
- The display supports up to 90Hz refresh rate which makes for a smooth experience - games that support 90Hz displays, like Alto's Odyssey, are particularly enjoyable to play
- Software on the Realme phones is much improved since the company switched to Realme UI, it is easy to use - it is also packed with features such as Digital Wellbeing, Focus Mode, Dark Mode, and Riding Mode among others - there are some exciting and useful features like Realme Dual-Mode Audio, which allows you to connect a Bluetooth and a wired headset at the same time to listen to music on the smartphone
- Rapid performance from the new MediaTek Helio G95 chipset - the SOC performs similar to the Helio G90T with an updated GPU, so apart from smooth regular usage, you would be getting a boost in your gaming sessions
- Good quad cameras at the back - the main unit boasts a 64MP sensor, with an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP micro and a 2MP depth sensor - Realme has upgraded the main sensor with a Sony sensor instead of a Samsung sensor on the Realme 6, everything else remains the same
- The daylight photos from the main sensor preserve the natural colour and have good exposure - it exhibits improved dynamic range, with better details compared to the Realme 6 - the new sensor is slightly better than the old one in the Realme 6
- The ultra-wide camera captures a wider perspective but details and colours are weaker compared to the main sensor as expected
- Portrait shots generally look good, and you get the option to adjust the background blur before shooting
- Low light photos look cleaner too, with less grain - shots captured using Night mode look more pleasing, compared to what the Realme 6 can produce
- The 16MP camera can take decent selfies - The selfie portrait mode is useful as it manages to correctly crop out the background, and there's also Night mode for bright selfies even in the dark
- Video rec. is decent, you have the option to rec. up to 4K without stabilisation - there's also Ultra Steady mode which offers great stabilisation but videos look a bit soft - ultra-wide camera videos are stabilised but less detailed, the resolution is limited to 1080p
- Overall, the cameras on the Realme 7 are a bit improved than the previous gen, which always a good thing
- Excellent battery life from the 5000 mAh battery, which is a big upgrade the Realme 6 - even with medium to heavy usage, it will get you a day and half of runtime on one charge
- 30W Dart Charge fast charging is very good and takes just about an hour to fill up the phone - it also supports 15W USB-C Power Delivery fast charging, which is handy
- The Realme 7 isn't a major update over the Realme 6, but it's a good enough refresh with its larger battery and better primary camera sensor - overall performance is very good, battery life is excellent, and the 90Hz display makes general usage feel smooth and fluid - the Realme 7 also looks great, it offers good value for your money
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The Nord has a plastic mid-frame which definitely affects its premium positioning
|
- The Realme 7 is actually thicker (9.4mm) and heavier (196.5g) than the 6, and this is very noticeable in daily usage - one-handed texting or photography can get fatiguing really quickly due to the additional weight
- There are still several pre-loaded apps however (though most of these can thankfully be uninstalled)
- The 2MP macro camera is not great, and even photos taken in broad daylight look quite poor
