2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Stylish looks - the back looks attractive with a glass-like finish
- The fingerprint sensor, placed at the back, is quick
- ColorOS is now more streamlined and refined than before, and has a number of useful add-on features
- Solid performance with the robust Snapdragon 665 processor - day-to-day use, as well as games run smoothly
- Decent overall camera performance for the price bracket with a quad rear camera setup
- Pictures, clicked both indoors and outdoors, come out fairly sharp with decent details
- Decent video recording quality too, with electronic image stabilisation (EIS)
- Decent 8MP front camera
- Nice Dolby Atmos dual stereo speakers - they ensure you get good quality sound while streaming movies or playing videos
- Very good battery life with a large 5000mAh battery - with moderate use, you can get up to 2 days of usage
|
- Stylish, impressive dual-color 3D gradient design, and good built quality
- The curved back panel gradually meets the side to provide an easy-to-hold experience
- Decent, large 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ (720×1600 pixels) resolution, an 82.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, and a water-drop notch
- Decent color reproduction and brightness
- Widevine L1 certification for HD video playback on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
- ColorOS is a fairly refined, sophisticated custom Android skin, with a number of useful add-on features
- Solid performance with a Snapdragon 665 powering the internals - both day-to-day stuff, and gaming is smooth
- Decent overall camera performance for the price bracket
- The device comes with a quad-camera setup - a 48-megapixel primary sensor + 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens + two 2MP cameras for "artistic portrait effects"
- You get good results in ideal lighting conditions across the board - the 48-megapixel primary sensor captures good images with decent texture, colors, and detail - the camera can capture impressive images in an ideal or sometimes challenging situation with good amount of dynamic range
- The camera manages to take okay images in low light, but things improve dramatically with the dedicated “Night” mode
- With the portrait mode, the A9 2020 does a decent job in background separation (though the 2 additional cameras for "artistic portrait effects" don't seem to add much value)
- Decent 16-megapixel front camera sensor for selfies
- Offers a good stereo audio effect with its bottom and top firing speakers
- Very good battery life with a large 5000mAh battery - you will comfortably get 2 days of use
- Support for reverse charging - you can use the device as a power bank to charge another smartphone

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- Overall, while the camera setup is decent for the price bracket, it's not really category leading
- On it's own the Oppo A5 2020, much like the Oppo A9 2020, is a pretty decent mid-range phone with 2 key highlights - a stylish design and a very good battery life - but its cameras and performance are nothing special, which puts it behind a lot of the competition in this its price category
|
- A bit bulky
- Like all glossy rear panels, the rear does easily attract fingerprints and smudges
- The panel is quite glossy so you may find it difficult to read content under direct sunlight
- Like most custom Android skins, it's not quite as simple, and clutter-free as stock Android
- It's definitely not category-leading performance though, many competitors provide faster processors
- Overall, while the camera setup is good for the price bracket, again it's not category leading
- No fast charging support (the included 10W charger inside the box with charges the device from 0 to 100 percent in about 2 hours and 25 minutes)
- On it's own the Oppo A9 2020 is a pretty decent mid-range phone with 2 key highlights - a stylish design and a very good battery life - but its cameras and performance are nothing special, which puts it behind a lot of the competition in this hotly contested price category
