2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Classy looking chassis - and a contemporary look, and a near edge-to-edge display with a small notch and larger screen-to-body ratio
- The gold accent around the horizontal dual rear camera setup, and fingerprint sensor adds some flair
- Both the fingerprint sensor and face unlock work pretty well
- Nice display - renders vivid colors, and brightness levels are decent enough for outdoor visibility
- Color OS is pretty feature packed - you get a lot of shortcuts, gestures, and features like Smart Sidebar, Game space, Kid space, and a bunch of different security options
- Day-to-day performance is decent, and casual games run fine with the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC (similar to Snapdragon 632)
- Decent set of dual rear cameras for the price - everything looks decent in daylight with good enough details - giving you social media shareable pictures
- Macros look fairly decent too with punchy colors and adequate details
- Decent portrait shots, with reasonably good edge detection
- Very good battery life - you will get 1.5 days+ with a big 4230mAh battery
|
- Nice design, with a modern front panel - a 6.4-inch display, superslim bezels and a top U-shaped notch
- Decent 6.4-inch AMOLED display - it has good color reproduction, and good sunlight legibility
- Samsung has gotten the software part on point with it's recent launches, with it's new One UI, that's now one of the better, more streamlined Android skins around - it's especially well suited for big displays like this, packs an intuitive gesture navigation system, and other useful things like a convenient 'dark mode'
- Good set of cameras for the price bracket
- The rear setup includes a 13-megapixel primary lens and a 5-megapixel wide-angle lens - the pictures come out especially good outdoors
- Portrait mode works well too, and there is Samsung's Live Focus option, which gives you control over how blurry the background appears
- The 8-MP selfie cam is good too - the color output is bold and realistic, and there's a good portrait mode here as well
- Very good battery life with a large 4000-mAh battery, combined with the low power display - you will easily get 1.5 days of use
- Decent fast charging speed - you will get 30% charge in 30 minutes, and 100% in less than 2 hours
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The fingerprint sensor is placed a bit high though, and is not the most comfortable to reach
- It's based on old Android Oreo though, which is a bit disappointing, for a phone launching in the middle of 2019
- Low light performance is a struggle
- The selfie camera can give good selfies under sunlight, but the AI beautification feature is a bit too aggressive, you will often end up with bad skin softening effects and white skin tone, resulting in artificial shots
- The selfie camera's (software) portrait mode also doesn’t work too well
- The Oppo A5s is a classy looking smartphone, with a big strong point in terms of battery - it will face tough competition from its counterparts, including Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2, and Realme 3, which provide better all-round value
|
- The glossy plastic body is easily scratched, and also tends to gather fingerprints (you will want to use a case)
- The phone's rear fingerprint sensor is slow (you will mostly prefer using face unlock)
- Screen resolution is on the low side though - text, and app icons can often look slightly jagged on the A20's display
- The performance powered by the Exynos 7904 chipset (similar to Snapdragon 632) and 3GB of RAM is fine in day-to-day use, but not quite up to the level of the best performers in this price bracket
- On the whole, while the A20 is a decent option for the price bracket, and does especially well with battery life and a decent set of cameras - however, it falls a bit behind in terms of performance, and is a mixed bag in terms of the display - AMOLED, but low resolution - you will find better all-round options from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme and Asus
