2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Stylish, impressive dual-color 3D gradient design, and good built quality
  • The curved back panel gradually meets the side to provide an easy-to-hold experience
  • Decent, large 6.5-inch IPS LCD screen with HD+ (720×1600 pixels) resolution, an 82.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, and a water-drop notch
  • Decent color reproduction and brightness
  • Widevine L1 certification for HD video playback on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video
  • ColorOS is a fairly refined, sophisticated custom Android skin, with a number of useful add-on features
  • Solid performance with a Snapdragon 665 powering the internals - both day-to-day stuff, and gaming is smooth
  • Decent overall camera performance for the price bracket
  • The device comes with a quad-camera setup - a 48-megapixel primary sensor + 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens + two 2MP cameras for "artistic portrait effects"
  • You get good results in ideal lighting conditions across the board - the 48-megapixel primary sensor captures good images with decent texture, colors, and detail - the camera can capture impressive images in an ideal or sometimes challenging situation with good amount of dynamic range
  • The camera manages to take okay images in low light, but things improve dramatically with the dedicated “Night” mode
  • With the portrait mode, the A9 2020 does a decent job in background separation (though the 2 additional cameras for "artistic portrait effects" don't seem to add much value)
  • Decent 16-megapixel front camera sensor for selfies
  • Offers a good stereo audio effect with its bottom and top firing speakers
  • Very good battery life with a large 5000mAh battery - you will comfortably get 2 days of use
  • Support for reverse charging - you can use the device as a power bank to charge another smartphone
  • Stunning, beautiful design, that's a treat to the eyes - Vivo S1 is easily among the most well-designed smartphones to launch this year
  • There is a mesmerising dual tone finish on the metal frame, and a unique 'diamond lattice' design back, that reflects colors in the most interesting ways - this is the kind of smartphone that will definitely get you a lot of Wows from everyone around
  • It not only looks great but also feels great to hold and use thanks to the 2.5D design
  • Fast in-display fingerprint sensor
  • Dedicated Google Assistant button
  • Very good 6.38-inch AMOLED display - you will get deep blacks and punchy colors
  • Funtouch OS UI looks very similar to iOS, and is pretty feature packed, including a good gesture navigation system, and an 'Ultra Game' mode
  • Daily performance is smooth all-round with a Helio P65 processor (similar to the Helio P70, and Snapdragon 660), and most games run well too
  • Decent set of triple rear cameras - 16MP primary + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth
  • The primary camera captures images with fairly good details
  • The depth camera helps with some decent portraits
  • The 32MP selfie camera is decent too, and does especially well with details (though the image softening algorithm is a bit too aggressive)
  • Outstanding battery life with a large 4500mAh battery paired with a low-power MediaTek Helio P65 SoC - you will comfortably clock 2 days of use
  • Bundled 18W fast charger
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A bit bulky
  • Like all glossy rear panels, the rear does easily attract fingerprints and smudges
  • The panel is quite glossy so you may find it difficult to read content under direct sunlight
  • Like most custom Android skins, it's not quite as simple, and clutter-free as stock Android
  • It's definitely not category-leading performance though, many competitors provide faster processors
  • Overall, while the camera setup is good for the price bracket, again it's not category leading
  • No fast charging support (the included 10W charger inside the box with charges the device from 0 to 100 percent in about 2 hours and 25 minutes)
  • On it's own the Oppo A9 2020 is a pretty decent mid-range phone with 2 key highlights - a stylish design and a very good battery life - but its cameras and performance are nothing special, which puts it behind a lot of the competition in this hotly contested price category
  • It's on the cluttered side though, and does have some bloatware - so the experience is not as clean and simple as stock Android
  • More complex games like PUBG though are not smooth at high graphics settings - and here the phone loses out to the best performing phones of this price bracket that pack the likes of Snapdragon 675, and Snapdragon 710
  • The ultra-wide camera provides for versatility in shot framing, but the quality is average - details are low, and the overall image is muted
  • Low light performance is average too
  • Overall, the cameras are decent for the price bracket, but not really comparable to the top camera phones of this price bracket, like Redmi Note 7 Pro, Realme 3 Pro, Realme X, and even the Vivo Z1 Pro
  • Uses the old microUSB port, instead of the modern USB-C port
  • On it's own the Vivo S1 is a pretty good device, but it faces some real tough competition at the moment - the camera and the performance are not the best for the price bracket, though if your main priorities are a best-in-class design, and excellent battery life, it could still make a lot of sense
