2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Absolutely stunning design - this one is sure to get you those 'oohs' and 'aaahs' when you whip it out in public - 2 unique innovations stand out - one is the unusual "water-drop notch" that reduces the notch to about as small as you could go without shifting to a 'pop-out camera' phone like the Find X - and second is the blue-black shimmering rear with its diamond pattern, that is just breathtaking to look at from any angle - it's not possible to stress this enough, the Oppo F9 Pro looks gorgeous
  • The water drop notch also ensures a commendable screen-to-body ratio of 90.8 percent (the iPhone X's ratio stands at a paltry 82 percent)
  • The phone’s face unlock and fingerprint mechanism are lightning fast, and at par with the OnePlus 6
  • The display by itself is great too - it's a bright screen with great, punchy colours - arguably the best display in this price bracket
  • Gorilla Glass 6 protection - one of the first phones in India to have it
  • Very good dual camera setup on the rear - takes colorful and bright photos, good portraits, and does reasonably well in low light too - overall, it's on par with the excellent Poco F1 and only a shade behind the OnePlus 6
  • Very good front camera too - takes good AI powered selfies - and is again comparable to the likes of Nokia 7 Plus, and Poco F1
  • Good call quality
  • Good battery life, with a 3500mAh battery - will comfortably last the day - and does not tend to heat up during processor-heavy tasks
  • Excellent SuperVOOC fast charging support, that's on par with the excellent Dash charging on the OnePlus 6
  • Overall, if you want a phone that's the ultimate looker, you won't go wrong with the Oppo F9 Pro, and you will get a pretty good camera to go along with it - having said that, if you prioritise performance over looks, there is no competing with the Poco F1 here, it's just in a different league - finally, if you want the most simple, clean software experience of all, with an equally good camera, then the Nokia 7 Plus is worth looking at
  • Looks quite slick with the deep jewel-tone colours for the frame and rear panel
  • Fingerprint and face recognition both work well
  • Modern screen design with a water-drop notch
  • Good viewing angles, and sunlight legibility
  • Vivo's custom AI assistant Jovi is useful at places - the screen to the left of the first home screen is called Jovi Smart Scene, and it shows cards for things like sports scores, the weather, to-dos, and a system-wide reading list that you can save articles or screenshots to from any app
  • The 20MP front camera takes good shots, especially in daytime
  • Lots of storage space, with a generous 128GB of memory
  • Battery life is the big USP of the phone with a giant 5000mAH battery - you will get a cool 2 days of use with moderate usage
  • Fast charging support
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • ColorOS is decent as an Android UI, has a lot of features, and is quite 'colorful', but it will certainly come with it's share of bloat - such as duplicate Music, Gallery and Phone Manager apps, an unnecessary smart assistant, and an annoying 2-step process to dismiss notifications
  • While the performance is pretty good in almost all use cases with a solid mid-range Helio P60 at the core (similar to Snapdragon 652), the performance expectations in this price bracket are now completely shifted since the launch of the powerhouse Poco F1 - if you are not much into heavy gaming, the Oppo F9 Pro will more than suffice - but if you want truly breathtaking performance, there is no match for the Poco F1 in the mid-range
  • While the cameras are good with still photography, video recording capabilities on the phone are average at best - there is no OIS or EIS so the videos are quite shaky - also, 1080p and 720p are the only modes in which you can shoot videos
  • The single speaker on the phone’s bottom, though loud, sounds hollow and crackles
  • Uses the old microUSB standard, instead of the modern USB-C
  • As nice as the finish of this phone is, it picks up fingerprints and smudges very easily
  • The Vivo Y17 is also fairly heavy and thick - that's the tradeoff you have to make in order to fit in the enormous 5000mAh battery
  • Screen resolution is on the low side
  • Vivo's Funtouch OS, while it does have some useful features, is in general quite cluttered, and a far cry from the simplicity of stock Android
  • There's also a ton of bloatware that comes pre-installed, and a lot of it is also can't be uninstalled
  • Then there are quirks that you need to learn your way around - for instance, if you choose to enable gestures instead of buttons for UI navigation, you'll have to learn exactly where to swipe so you don't pull up the iOS-like Shortcut Center inadvertently
  • While day-to-day performance is pretty smooth, the Vivo Y17 underperforms for this price category with a relatively weak MediaTek Helio P35 processor inside (similar to Snapdragon 632)
  • Gaming, especially with more complex games like PUBG, is a laggy, jittery experience
  • Average set of triple rear cameras (primary + wide-angle + depth)
  • The focus doesn't always lock perfectly and the Vivo Y17 tends to struggle with subtle contrasts
  • Switching to the wide-angle camera makes the quality dip further with much less accurate colours, and a lot of overprocessing
  • Low light performance is also quite poor - the focus is soft, objects in the foreground are grainy, and details are murky
  • The default video resolution is 1280x720 for some reason, and there's no stabilisation so your recordings will be quite shaky - overall video quality is also disappointing
  • The camera app also has some quirks, and is not the most intuitive to use
  • The single speaker on the bottom is quite average, producing only grating, harsh sound
  • Uses the old Micro-USB port, instead of the modern USB-C standard
  • Overall, with the ordinary processor and cameras, the Vivo Y17 is quite simply outclassed by other phones available at its price, and even by several that cost a lot less - you will be better off looking at the competition
