2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Gorgeous, beautiful, curvy design - the Oppo R17 Pro is one of the most beautiful and elegant designs we have seen in 2018
  • It's sleek, has tapered edges, rounded corners, and is made of a metal and glass combination that exudes a high-quality feel
  • It’s dense but it doesn’t feel too heavy or too light - the perfect balance of weight and ergonomics make the R7 Pro extremely comfortable to hold
  • The most eye-catching part about the R17 Pro’s design is its new fog gradient color
  • The coating on the Oppo R17 Pro’s rear glass panel isn’t reflective - instead, it has more of a satin appearance and looks less like glass - which means it hides fingerprints and smudges more effectively and blends in more seamlessly with the metal frame
  • The in-screen fingerprint sensor works well, and is reasonably fast
  • Brilliant, large, 6.4 inch AMOLED screen with 19.5:9 aspect ratio - it looks fantastic, with the vibrant colors, great contrast, and inky deep blacks
  • The display is surrounded by extremely thin bezels and has a very tiny (water-drop) notch giving it an impressive 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio
  • Oppo's ColorOS UI, while it might be a bit too bright, playful, and iOS-like for some people, is jam-packed with plenty of features
  • On your left-most home screen lives a smart assistant giving you quick access to specific functions and other glanceable information such as the weather, calendar, and step tracker
  • The smart sidebar can also give you quick access to functions and apps by swiping in from the edge of the display similar to Samsung’s edge UX features
  • ColorOS also supports many other smart features, such as smart driving and gesture controls for split-screen multitasking, taking a screenshot, and turning on the display
  • It also supports gesture-based navigation in place of the traditional on-screen navigation buttons
  • Top-notch performance with the new Snapdragon 710 and an ample 8GB of RAM - the device is super quick to launch applications and effortlessly multitasks - it's silky smooth when navigating through the interface or scrolling through a webpage
  • Very good triple camera setup on the rear
  • The primary camera is a 12MP sensor with OIS and a variable aperture (a la Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9) - picture quality is great - images are sharp and detailed, and color reproduction is vibrant without appearing unnatural
  • The secondary sensor is 20MP at f/2.6 and leveraged to create background bokeh for portrait mode and 3D portrait mode lighting effects
  • The third camera is a unique TOF (Time of Flight) 3D stereo camera - the 3D camera allows you to capture 3D images in seconds by circling the camera around an object or person - unfortunately it's a bit buggy at present - and has no clear use-cases - this might change though with software updates
  • The front-facing camera is impressive too with a whopping 25MP sensor, and selfie photos come out quite good with natural colors and skin tones
  • The AI camera features on both the rear and front cameras of course help too
  • Another cool feature that works very well is the Ultra Night Mode for low-light or night time photography - this will automatically kick in if the camera decides the situation is too dark, or you can toggle to it manually - it significantly improves shadow and highlight detail and produces a brighter image - the differences with and without are often astounding
  • All in all, the overall image quality from the cameras is exceptional, and puts them just a shade below the best cameras on the block - the likes of the Pixel 3, and the iPhone XS - and above what what will probably be it's primary competitor - the OnePlus 6T
  • Long-lasting battery life, with a total capacity of 3700mAh - you will comfortably get a day and more
  • SuperVOOC Flash Charging is crazy fast - and internally uses two separate batteries (1850 mAh each) for even faster charging - you will get an unbelievable 40% charge in just 10 minutes using the bundled SuperVOOC Charger - and about 95% in 30 minutes!
  • The phone also stays cool to the touch while charging as SuperVOOC keeps the heat in the charging brick instead of transferring it to the phone
  • The fast charging speed even blows the likes of OnePlus dash charging (which has been the fast charging benchmark so far) out of the park
  • There are no 2 ways about it - the Oppo R17 Pro is a very good device that's packaged in a beautiful and well-crafted design
  • It can provide some strong competition to the mid-range flagship champion, the OnePlus 6T - while some people might prefer the OnePlus for a closer to stock Android UI and more reliable Android updates, the Oppo R17 Pro on the other hand gives you (slightly) better cameras, a more stunning design, and some crazy fast charging speeds
  • Xiaomi has gone big on the design front this time - the Redmi K20 Pro has a glass back with one of the most evocative gradient patterns you'll come across on any phone today - it's both premium to feel, and stunning to look at
  • The gradient effect that kicks in under the right lighting condition is quite mesmerising
  • The front is modern and sharp too, with a 'full screen' notch-less display (the selfie camera is a 'popup' one)
  • Decent in-screen fingerprint sensor - reasonably quick and reliable
  • Gorgeous, 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display - easily one of the best panels you'll find in this price segment - it has vibrant colors and excellent contrast levels, and sunlight readability is great as well
  • Of course, the lack of a cutout means you get an all-screen front, and the minimal bezels at the top and bottom create an immersive experience when playing games or viewing videos on the device
  • MIUI, especially with it's recent improvements continues to one of the better, more cohesive custom Android UIs around - and it's packed with features like gesture navigation, anti-flicker mode, reading mode, second space, dual apps, themes, etc
  • The K20 Pro also adds the POCO Launcher on top of MIUI - which brings the Dark Mode and App drawer to the K20 Pro
  • Xiaomi is also rolling out a Game Turbo feature that prioritizes bandwidth and mutes incoming notifications when you're in a game
  • Top-notch flagship performance with the top-notch Snapdragon 855 chipset at the core - the K20 Pro is expectedly a performance beast - and gets the highest Antutu scores of any Android phone at the moment
  • Very good triple rear camera setup - the phone has a 48MP primary camera backed by an 8MP telephoto lens and a 13MP wide-angle shooter
  • Image quality is great in all sorts of lighting conditions - they look crisp, vibrant, and details are captured well
  • The ultra-wide sensor and 2x telephoto lens also produce generally good results
  • The K20 Pro also comes with a dedicated night mode that does the usual multi-frame processing, and the results are pretty good - it gets more light in, and makes things sharper
  • Decent 20MP popup selfie camera, with a good portrait mode
  • Overall, the rear camera setup on the K20 Pro is the best for this price bracket, and matches up well to more expensive phones like the OnePlus 7 and Asus 6Z
  • Has a 3.5mm jack, that a lot of flagships these days tend to skimp on
  • Loud (single) downward firing speaker
  • Very good battery life with a 4000mAH battery - combine that with a very efficient 855 processor, and you will comfortably get 1.5 days of use
  • Fast charging support - up to a cool 27W (a 27W capacity charger will however need to be purchased separately for super fast charging - that said, Xiaomi does include a still-very-fast 18W charger in the box)
  • Xiaomi has again hit the ball out of the park with the Redmi K20 Pro, providing a still-excellent-value successor to the super successful Poco F1 - this is the cheapest price point at which you will get the flagship Snapdragon 855, along with all the latest features of 2019 - full screen, popup selfie camera, and in-display fingerprint sensor - people who attach more value to the software experience though might still want to spend a little more and go for the OnePlus 7 or Asus 6Z, for a cleaner experience
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • No water resistance
  • Overall though, with the excessive bloatware and pointless system apps, the software is pretty cluttered - something that's long been an issue with heavily customised Android skins like ColorOS - if you are a 'pure' Android enthusiast, you want to look elsewhere
  • Face unlock mechanism is a little clunky - you have to first wake the screen and swipe up for the camera module to engage (this might get sorted via a software update though)
  • One issue with MIUI in recent times is the ads in the interface & notifications - those are still there (though a little less intrusive) - and while there are ways to disable them, it's a technical solution that a lot of prospective buyers will not be aware of
