2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Looks chic and robust for its price - the front is a modern, water-drop notch, 6.2-inch panel, and the back is glossy plastic
  • Decent, contrast-rich, 6.2-inch IPS display
  • Packs Samsung's new One UI, which is one of the more streamlined and refined Android skins out there, and includes a nice, intuitive gesture navigation system
  • Good, solid performance for the price bracket, with a Samsung Exynos 7884 at the core - you will get smooth daily performance, as well as smooth gameplay in casual to mid-end games
  • The single rear-facing 13MP camera takes decent-looking pictures, for the price bracket (though detail, sharpness levels, and dynamic range could have been better)
  • The 5MP front camera is also ok for the price (though again exposure levels and image noise could be better)
  • Decent mono speaker
  • Beautiful, premium, slick colorway back panel - one of the best looking phones in this price bracket
  • Modern, sharp design up-front too, with a large screen and water-drop notch
  • Fast fingerprint reader
  • Good, 6.26-inch IPS LCD HD+ display - easily among the best in this price bracket - it has good sunlight legibility, great viewing angles, and good color tuning - watching movies and images on the screen is a pretty good experience
  • MIUI is one of the more refined Android UIs, and has plenty of customization features - you can easily do things like switch between buttons and gestures for navigation and turn off the notch depending on your preference
  • Very good performance, with a Snapdragon 632 chipset at the core - daily use is smooth and pleasant, simple games are a breeze, and even complex games like PUBG do fine on low graphics settings
  • Good dual-rear camera setup - a combination of a 12MP primary camera paired with a 2MP depth sensor - the end results are fairly impressive
  • Images shot outdoors in good light come out very well with retained details even in shadow regions
  • Portrait mode is good too - edge detection is rather good and the bokeh fall-off is fairly natural
  • Good selfie camera too, with a decent software-based portrait mode, and a decent beauty mode
  • Overall, Xiaomi has scored here again, with probably the best overall camera package at this price point
  • The phone has a single speaker but it manages to be pretty loud - there is little to no bottom end, but on the flip side, music doesn’t crackle even with the volume cranked up to the maximum
  • Excellent battery life - with a 4000mAh battery, the phone comfortably lasts a day and a half on a single charge - and with lighter usage, you can easily manage two days
  • Overall, the Redmi 7 is a very good deal for anyone looking for an entry-level smartphone that can handle all the basics and more - it delivers good performance and a well-optimized usage experience, and it looks smashing while at it
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The glossy back is of course also a fingerprint magnet
  • No notification LED
  • No fingerprint sensor (there is face unlock though, which works reasonably well)
  • No auto brightness sensor
  • No compass
  • Overall, the A10 is just an average phone from Samsung in what is now a pretty competitive price bracket - it misses out on key things like an auto-brightness sensor, and a compass, and so comes out as weak competition to the segment leaders from Xiaomi and Realme
  • It's an all plastic affair though, so the build quality is definitely not as premium as the Redmi Note series (which have glass backs)
  • The glossy back, like all glossy backs, attracts a lot of fingerprints, and will scratch relatively easily too (so using a case is a good idea)
  • It continues to be ad-strewn though - and by default you will get ads on the lock screen, ads whenever you install an app on your phone, and ads in the notification shade - all of this can be turned off, but that requires a few steps and know-how - something a lot of people using the phone won't have
  • Low light shots are more of a mixed bag (the phone tends to reduce the shutter speed, which makes it harder to get a sharp image), and video recording lacks stabilisation - but that's to be expected in this price bracket
  • That said, if you can raise your budget by about a 1000 bucks, the Redmi Note 7 with an all-glass design, a Snapdragon 660 processor, and a Full HD display is an even better value proposition
