2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Looks slick, and reflects off the same iridescent rainbow-like effects at the back as the Samsung Galaxy A50 when caught against light, only this one, comes with a prism-like pattern that Samsung calls a “3D prism design” - it's a head-turner no doubt
- And while the Samsung Galaxy A50s bears a polycarbonate body, it doesn’t look cheap and sports a very premium “glassy” look overall
- On the front is a sharp, modern panel with slim-bezels, and a U-shaped notch design (similar to Galaxy A50)
- Facial recognition to unlock your phone works well
- Beautiful 6.4-inch Full HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display with a high 91.6% screen-to-body ratio, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection
- The screen looks sharp and bright, and being an AMOLED display, you will get deep black and vivid colors - sunlight legibility is also pretty good
- Samsung's One UI is now one of the better, more clean and streamlined Android UIs around, and is well optimised for modern large displays (like this one)
- Samsung has also added a Game Booster tool to the A50s to offer a better gaming experience
- Other features include an intuitive gesture-based navigation system, and an option to wake up Bixby using the power button
- Solid mid-range performance with the robust Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC (similar to Snapdragon 660 and Exynos 9610) - the experience is pleasant and smooth throughout including with games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9
- Good thermal management too - the phone doesn't warm up quickly despite extended game play
- Decent set of triple rear cameras for the price bracket - a 48MP primary camera with an f/2.0 aperture
- a second 5MP depth camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a third 8MP ultra-wide lens
- The quality of the pictures from the primary camera is quite good during daylight and outdoors - the A50s handles high-contrast scenes well and adds the right amount of detail and vibrance
- Night mode works reasonably ok for low-light situations and doesn’t add unnatural exposure to the scene
- Portrait mode ("Live focus") works well too especially when capturing outdoor daylight scenes
- Decent video recording performance with a dedicated 'super steady' mode which allows you to shoot decent “action” videos
- Decent 32MP selfie camera - in daylight outdoor lighting, selfies clicked turn out quite clear (not so much is low-light though)
- Overall, this is a fairly good camera setup for this price bracket (though not quite up to the level of the category leaders)
- Very good battery life with a 4000mAh battery - you will get about 1.5 days of use
|
- Jazzy, eye-catching back panel design with gradient finish and the unique diamond-shaped camera module
- The slim profile of the camera module barely protrudes from the back
- The in-display fingerprint sensor works well
- Face unlock is present too, which is reliable (though, not as quick as on the other phones at this price level)
- Vivid, crisp 6.38-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display - the colours are also very punchy thanks to the AMOLED panel, and text and icons are adequately sharp
- The display gets very bright, making it easily legible even under direct sunlight
- Widevine L1 DRM certified - you can watch Netflix and Prime in crisp HD resolution
- Funtouch OS based on Android 9 Pie looks very similar to iOS, and is pretty feature packed
- Decent performance powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 - it handles multitasking well and regular usage is smooth
- Decent set of quad rear cameras - 48MP primary + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP macro + 2MP depth camera
- Close-ups are good, with good bokeh and details in objects
- In bokeh mode, the Vivo S1 Pro's depth camera does a decent job of detecting edges, and blurs out the right areas - colours and details are also good
- The macro camera is also handy at times, and lets you get very close to the subjects
- Very good 32MP selfie camera - it captures detailed photos when shooting under ideal light - results are fairly good even when shooting against the light
- The Vivo S1 Pro packs in a 4500 mAh battery, which easily lasts for 2 days of moderate use
- Overall, the Vivo S1 Pro is a decent pick if all you want is a stylish design, good battery life, and a punchy display

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The fingerprint sensor that sits beneath the display, is a tad bit slow
- The phone is a smudge-magnet, relatively easy to scratch, and also slippery (so you will want to use a case)
- This is however not the best performing phone in this price bracket - you will get better CPUs and stronger performance from Xiaomi and Realme phones
- The camera app is a little bit slow to launch and there is a small shutter lag when capturing photos
- As is right now the case with most mid-range phones, the wide-angle camera’s photos look fairly distorted, and details are soft
- Low light performance could have been better, across the board
- Volume levels of the speaker are a bit on the low side and could have been better - it's a little difficult to hear audio outdoors in a noisy environment
- Although the phone supports 15W fast charging, but it only includes a 10W standard (non fast) charger - it takes over 3 hours for A50s to go from 0% to 100%
- On the whole, the A50s, while a pretty decent phone by itself, will find the competition much more intense (than what its predecessor A50 faced) - unless you are a Samsung loyalist, you will want to look at the competition especially from the likes of Realme and Xiaomi

- The Vivo S1 Pro feels a little chunky at 8.68mm thick
- The back isn't glass, as Vivo still uses laminated plastic
- Having said that, the interface is unnecessarily complicated - swipe-up gesture to access system shortcuts is confusing, since it's in the notification shade in stock or other Android UIs
- There's a lot of bloatware preinstalled on the Vivo S1 Pro (though the third-party apps can be removed)
- Heavy games such as PUBG Mobile however struggle to run at a smooth frame rate even at the Low graphics preset
- This isn't a bad processor, but it's typically now found in phones closer to the Rs. 10, 000 mark, such as the Realme 5i
- In daylight, the primary camera manage to capture average-looking landscape shots - images lack depth, objects at the sides of the frame also have a bit of grain - HDR kicks in when needed, but the end result isn't always very good - some images have a very cool, bluish hue to them, which look unnatural
- The wide-angle camera offered a nice perspective, but colours weren't very accurate
- Low-light photos are just strictly average - focusing is a lot slower in the dark, and it takes a second or two longer to save each photo - there's no dedicated night shooting mode either
- No option for a background bokeh effect with the front camera
- Videos can only be recorded at up to 1080p, which is not great, especially at this price - there's no stabilisation either, which is a big letdown
- Low-light video is not very good, from both primary & ultra-wide lens - has lots of grain as well as weak details
- Overall, rear cameras are nothing special - you will get better outcomes with the Realme X2 or the Redmi K20
- The single speaker doesn't get too loud and the sound is a little tinny
- Vivo uses its Dual Engine Fast Charge feature, but the 18W charger isn't the fastest - charging the phone completely takes about two and a half hours
- If you'd prefer a more well-rounded phone though, we suggest looking at offerings from Realme and Xiaomi instead, such as the Realme X2 and the Redmi K20, which have much more powerful SoCs
