Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is a significantly better phone, but the realme 3 Pro (6GB RAM, 128GB) is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But if budget is not a constraint then we recommend the Samsung Galaxy A70

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Gorgeous design, with a polycarbonate back panel that has a stunning prism light effect
  • The back is well rounded around the sides to make handling easier, and blends in with the curved glass on the front seamlessly
  • Has a good grip
  • The handling is also made easy by the excellent weight distribution of the phone which makes it seem a lot lighter than it is
  • Absolutely gorgeous, 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, with a tiny water drop notch and a near bezel-less design - you get very vibrant colours and perfect inky blacks, as well as good sunlight legibility
  • Video viewing and gaming experience on the giant display is an absolute delight - as far as media consumption goes, this is simply one of the best phones out there, period
  • Running the Galaxy A70 is Samsung's new OneUI - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well thought-out experiences
  • There are many useful add-ons on board - like gesture navigation, and a great 'dark' mode
  • Samsung Pay makes the cut too, making this the cheapest phone to sport the full version of the payments app, which will be especially useful if your usage usually relies largely on card payments
  • Very good performance backed by the powerful Snapdragon 675 SoC, 6 GB of RAM, and super fast UFS storage - everything from daily use to complex games like PUBG is smooth as butter (add that to the ridiculously wide display, and all gamers are in for a treat)
  • Decent triple-camera setup on the back with a primary 32-megapixel f/1.7 sensor, a secondary ultrawide 8-megapixel shooter and a third 5-megapixel depth sensor - images come out nice with true to life colors
  • The ultra-wide sensor provides some extra shot framing options
  • Decent video recording performance with good detail levels, including some impressive slow-mo video recording
  • Very good front camera - the 32-megapixel sensor does a great job at bringing out the detail in facial features and hair
  • The bundled in-ear earphones, when paired with Dolby Atmos, makes for a pretty good audio experience
  • The loudspeaker is decent (though not exceptional)
  • Very good battery life with a large 4500 mAh battery - it will comfortably last you a day and more, even with that large display
  • There is also fast charging on-board, with the included 25W charger getting you up to around 70% in an hour
  • If you are looking for the best media consumption device for your money, the Galaxy A70 is a pretty good option - the large, beautiful Super AMOLED display + the big battery + Dolby Atmos support - make for an excellent combo
  • Gorgeous design, with some eye-catching color combinations for the (plastic) back panel
  • Very good build quality and finish
  • Fast fingerprint sensor, and face unlock
  • Good 6.3inch IPS panel, with a small dewdrop notch, and minimal bezels - it's sharp, decently bright, has high contrast, and accurate colors
  • Media playback is handled well, and videos are rendered with punchy colours
  • ColorOS 6 UI has a new, cleaner look, and is quite feature packed, including plenty of motion and screen gestures
  • Thankfully, unlike, its main competitor, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, there are no spammy ads in the UI
  • Class leading performance (especially in terms of GPU) with a Snapdragon 710 at the core - everything from daily use to complex games like PUBG is a breeze
  • The phone also doesn't heat too much even after prolonged gaming sessions
  • Excellent camera package - mostly on par with the leading camera phone of this price bracket, the Redmi Note 7 Pro
  • Packs the 16-megapixel Sony IMX519 sensor with an f/1.7 aperture - this is the same sensor used in some premium phones such as the OnePlus 6T - there's also a secondary 5-megapixel depth sensor for the phone's Portrait mode
  • In daylight, the the Realme 3 Pro captures very good details in landscape shots
  • Macros are sharp and well detailed too
  • The phone's AI scene recognition is quick to recognise most common objects such as flowers
  • Night photography is pretty decent too - and the the phone's Nightscape mode comes in handy here - it takes a second or two longer than usual to capture your shot, but the end result is a sharper image with much better detail
  • The depth sensor does a very good job with edge detection, and even in low light, you can get a very pleasing bokeh effect
  • Good 25-megapixel selfie camera too - selfies from the Realme 3 Pro pack a lot of detail and noise is kept in check - colors are excellent as well
  • Selfie portraits are quite good too, even though they don't get the benefit of a dedicated depth sensing camera - subject separation is very competent, there are no clipped ears and blur is natural-looking as well
  • Good video recording performance too - with good overall footage quality, and nice color reproduction
  • The single speaker gets loud enough for media playback
  • Excellent battery life - the combination of a large 4045mAh battery pack, an efficient processor, and Realme's optimizations means that this an easy 2-days battery life phone, even beating out (slightly) the excellent Redmi Note 7 Pro in battery life tests
  • Super fast VOOC fast charging using the bundled charger is again class-leading - it can top up the battery from zero all the way to 90 percent in about an hour
  • Overall, the Realme 3 Pro is absolutely great bang-for-the-buck, and is pretty neck-to-neck with the other top phone in this price bracket - the Redmi Note 7 Pro - while the Redmi Note 7 has a more premium glass build, and the modern USB Type-C port, the Realme 3 Pro has an edge in terms of a bundled fast charger, a slightly better processor, and cleaner (ad-free) software
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • This is a large phone though (one of the largest mainstream phones currently available), so one-handed use is pretty much out of the question - people with small hands would also want to look at other options
  • The glossy plastic back is of course a smudge magnet, and will also pick up scratches easily (the lack of a bundled case makes it worse)
  • Very iffy in-display fingerprint sensor - the Galaxy A70 needs you to be very precise about the way you position your finger, how much pressure you apply and how long you press and hold - making it less than a pleasure to use
  • Face unlock is on the slow side too, with a second or two between it getting to see a face and unlocking
  • Low light performance of the rear camera setup is average
  • Details and dynamic range on the rear camera setup could also be a bit better
  • The lack of a dedicated night mode and stabilisation might also prove to be red flags for photography enthusiasts
  • Overall, for the price bracket, the camera package on the Galaxy A70 is decent, but not the best - you will find better camera phones in the competition
  • On the other hand, the competition is pretty tough - the POCO F1 will provide you better performance and cameras at a cheaper price (at the cost of a boring design, and non-AMOLED display), the Nokia 8.1 will give you better cameras + stock Android goodness + faster updates, and the Vivo V15 Pro/Oppo F11 Pro will give you better cameras + 'true full screen' pop-up selfie designs
  • Additionally all of these competing phones will also have much more manageable sizes
  • Realme continues to pre-install quite a few third-party apps such as a Webnovel, NewsPoint, ShareChat, etc (though most of them can be uninstalled)
  • Video stabilization at 1080p could have been better though
  • Uses the old microUSB port, instead of the modern USB Type-C port
