Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy A71 is a slightly better phone, but the realme 6 Pro (6GB RAM, 128GB) is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much your want to spend!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Crushingly beautiful 'Prism' design, as soon as the light hits the back, there is a captivating blast of colours - it's a stunning view for sure!
  • It is a pleasure to hold, handle, and use as a daily driver - the frame provides just enough grip to make it secure in hand, while the slim profile helps in keeping it pocket and one-hand friendly
  • It manages to stay quite slim and lightweight (by today's standards) - the Galaxy A71 is just 7mm thin and weighs 179g
  • Absolutely gorgeous, 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, with a tiny punch-hole camera and a near bezel-less design - you get vibrant colours and perfect inky blacks, as well as good sunlight legibility
  • Video viewing and gaming experience on the giant display is an absolute delight - as far as media consumption goes, this is simply one of the best phones out there, period
  • Running the Galaxy A71 is Samsung's OneUI 2 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well thought-out experiences
  • There are many useful add-ons on board - like gesture navigation, and a great 'dark' mode
  • Samsung Pay makes the cut too, making this the cheapest phone to sport the full version of the payments app, which will be especially useful if your transactions largely rely on card payments
  • Good performance backed by the powerful Snapdragon 730 SoC, 8 GB of RAM, and super fast UFS storage - everything from daily use to complex games like PUBG is fairly smooth (add that to the ridiculously wide display, and all gamers are in for a treat)
  • Good quad-camera setup on the back with a primary 64MP sensor, a secondary ultra-wide 12MP shooter, a 5MP Macro and a 5MP depth sensor
  • The default 16MP photos from primary camera are good - detail is enough, dynamic range is very good, the colours are lively and saturated and the noise reduction works well
  • The new 12MP ultra-wide camera is a notable upgrade over the old 8MP shooter in the Galaxy A70s in both resolution and picture quality - there is more detail, better sharpness, the colours are punchy, and, of course, you can fit a lot more in the frame
  • The Galaxy A71 shoots good portraits, subject detection and separation are very good, and the blur looks just right
  • Low light photos are decent from both primary and ultra-wide cameras and the night mode helps further in getting more light and reducing noise
  • Good video recording performance with good detail levels, including some impressive slow-mo video recording with great stabilisation
  • Good front camera - the 32-megapixel sensor does a good job with nice colours and wide dynamic range, the details are quite good as far as selfie cameras go
  • The bundled in-ear earphones, when paired with Dolby Atmos, makes for a pretty good audio experience
  • The loudspeaker is decent (though not exceptional)
  • Very good battery life with a large 4500 mAh battery - it will comfortably last you a day or more, even with that large display
  • There is also fast charging on-board, with the included 25W charger it takes 81 minutes for a full charge
  • The Galaxy A71 is a good all-rounder and a tangible upgrade over the A70s - the large, beautiful Super AMOLED display + the big battery + Dolby Atmos support - make for an excellent media consumption device
  • Looks elegant and understated while still being eye-catching - the back has a very subtle gradient design where you can see the thunderbolt symbol flashing off the phone
  • The dual hole-punch cutout at the front gives the phone a modern appearance
  • Fingerprint Sensor is embedded in the unlock button and it is insanely quick and a pleasure to use - face recognition continues to be quick too, and works equally well even in the dark
  • The back is Gorilla Glass 5, so scuff marks aren't really an issue
  • Good 6.6-inch IPS LCD FHD+ display - it gives off quite punchy, and vivid colours
  • The 90Hz refresh rate on the Realme 6 Pro makes for a smooth and seamless visual experience
  • Software is one place where Realme has taken a big leap, the Realme UI is easy to use - it is also packed with features such as Digital Wellbeing, Focus Mode, Dark Mode, and Riding Mode among others - there are some more interesting and useful features like Realme Dual-Mode Audio, which allows you to connect a Bluetooth and a wired headset at the same time to listen to music on the smartphone
  • There are still a number of pre-loaded apps however (though most of these can thankfully be uninstalled)
  • Excellent performance for the price - the Snapdragon 720G is a powerful chip, so as expected, general usage and multitasking is handled superbly - gaming performance is nothing to scoff at, the phone handles heavy games like PUBG at the highest settings with ease
  • Good quad cameras for the price - there's a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP telephoto camera, and a 2MP macro camera
  • Pictures from the primary camera look pretty good with fairly good details and very good dynamic range
  • The HDR mode works quite well and retains the highlights of the picture and there is a good amount of detail in the shadow regions
  • Ultra-wide camera also works well, both indoors and during daylight (though, as expected, quality is not on par with the primary camera)
  • Photos captured by the telephoto camera are decent too - you can zoom upto 20X with a mix of optical and digital zoom
  • Portrait mode also works well, even for objects, and the level of depth can be adjusted before you take a shot
  • In low light, the primary camera is pretty capable and manages a fair bit of detail with good colours and you can use the night mode with all cameras except the macro and it helps boost the brightness and detail in the shot
  • Very good dual selfie cameras, 16MP primary and 8MP Ultra-wide - the wide-angle camera is great for taking a group selfie and you can even shoot videos with it
  • Very good battery life with the 4300 mAh cell - the 6 Pro delivers a solid day and a half of battery life, even with heavy usage
  • The bundled 30W fast charger is very quick and manages to charge the battery from zero to about 90 percent in an hour
  • The Realme 6 Pro is a good overall package that offer almost everything that one would want from mid-range phone - it looks great, offers powerful performance, clicks stunning pictures in almost all lightning situations, and delivers long lasting battery life - the inclusion of wide-angle selfie camera and telephoto camera gives it an extra edge over the competition
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • In-display fingerprint sensor is neither the fastest nor the more accurate
  • Having said that, there are certainly even better performing competitors around, like the realme X2 Pro with it's top of the line Snapdragon 855 Plus CPU
  • The 5MP macro camera is average, it has fixed focus so getting the focus right is difficult and the final output isn't that great
  • Overall, for the price bracket, the camera package on the Galaxy A71 is good, but not the best - you will find better camera phones in the competition
  • Having said that, both realme and Xiaomi are bringing meaningful innovation to their phone, be it higher watt charging, smooth display or top of the line performance, things which are not seen in the Galaxy A71 - in their comparison, the Galaxy A71 get a little overshadowed
  • The Realme 6 Pro is quite chunky at 8.9mm and a bit heavy at 202g
  • The macro lens doesn't really excel at what it is supposed to do, the detailing of the images is low because of the very low 2MP resolution (though, it help take closer shots of smaller subjects)
  • However, the Realme 6 Pro and the Realme X2 have very similar features, camera capabilities and performance, and the only really differentiating factors are their design and displays and if you would prefer an AMOLED panel and an in-display fingerprint sensor, the Realme X2 would be the one to pick
