2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Solid build quality
  • The Samsung Galaxy A8 Star sports a tall, 6.28-inch FHD+ (1080×2220 pixels) Super AMOLED Infinity display- the display is bright, the text looks sharp and sunlight legibility looks good too (viewing angles could be better though)
  • Additional options like a Blue light filter, and customisable font size and style, are good to have - you can also choose which apps you want to run in the 'full-screen' mode
  • Samsung Experience UI is one of the better Android UIs - it's not too heavy - and comes with useful software add-ons like 'Smart stay' (to keep the screen on while you are looking at it), Games Launcher, one-handed operation mode, Multi Window mode, 'Smart capture' (to capture the current screen and scrollable area), 'direct call' (to make a voice call by picking up and holding the device near your ear while viewing call, message, or contact details), 'Smart alert' (to set the device to alert you if you have missed calls or new messages when you pick up the device), 'Easy mute' (to mute incoming calls or alarms by using palm motions or facing the device’s screen downwards), 'Samsung Secure Folder' (that lets you save your personal data and information), and Bixby Assistant
  • Good, solid, snappy performance powered by Octa Core Snapdragon 660 - it never misses a beat, whatever you throw at it - having said that, it's still a notch below the Snapdragon 845 powered OnePlus 6
  • Decent dual rear camera setup - daylight shots are good and the camera captures a good amount of detail, creates really well-exposed photos with good dynamic range - the autofocus speeds are fast and accurate too - and macro shots are good as well - Dual-camera Live focus mode clearly blurs out the background - low light performance is ok too, though not exceptional
  • The 24MP front camera is decent too, and can also do software bokeh effects
  • Decent loudspeaker
  • Good call quality
  • Very good battery life - powered by a huge 3700mAh battery - in regular use, you can get approximately two days on a single charge
  • Fast charging support: it can charge from 0 to 50% in just 44 minutes and 0 to 100% takes 1 hour and 44 minutes using the bundled adaptive fast charger
  • Beautiful, 'shimmering' rear (plastic) panel, and a modern, notch-less 6.5-inch OLED screen - easily one of the best looking phones in this price bracket
  • The notch-less display spans almost edge to edge, with a pop-up selfie camera mechanism (which is quite something to have, in this price bracket)
  • Fairly fast in-display fingerprint reader
  • The pop-up camera on the Realme X has a very quick ejection and retraction mechanism, which makes face recognition work pretty seamlessly too
  • Very good 6.5-inch OLED screen - colors are lively, with deep blacks
  • The lack of a notch really helps make the screen appear immersive, and consuming content on the screen is a pleasure
  • ColorOS UI is now much more streamlined than before - there’s also now an app drawer, and a useful shortcut menu accessed by swiping from the sides
  • The gesture navigation is nice and intuitive too
  • Thankfully, it's not ad-strewn either, like some of the recent phones from Xiaomi
  • Very good performance backed by the powerful Snapdragon 710 chipset - everything from daily use to high-end games is smooth
  • GPU performance is an especially strong point of the Snapdragon 710, so if you are into gaming, the phone tends to comfortably outperform rivals
  • Very good set of dual rear cameras (48MP+5MP) and front camera (16MP)
  • Good overall image quality in daylight, and fairly good quality in low-light as well
  • Night mode is pretty effective too
  • Very good portraits
  • Pretty great selfies too, from the 16MP front camera
  • Realme’s EIS does a solid job of stabilization during videos at up to 1080p/30fps
  • Support for 4K video recording (without EIS though)
  • Overall, the Realme X is among the best camera setups of this price bracket, comparable to the excellent cameras on the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro
  • The Dolby Atmos-boosted speaker sounds pretty rich and gets fairly loud
  • Good battery life with a 3750 mAh cell - you will comfortably get a day of use, even with heavy usage
  • The class-leading VOOC fast-charging nicely complements the long battery life - it fills a completely depleted battery in 1:18h and it's at the 50% mark 30 minutes into it - which are some excellent numbers
  • The Realme X looks like an incredible value package, no matter how you look at it, and will inevitably disrupt its price bracket in a big way - what you get is top-end specs, a 'full screen' AMOLED display with a pop-up selfie camera, very good performance, an excellent set of cameras, and super fast charging - you can't ask for more
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A bit on the bulky side
  • In absolute terms, the Samsung Galaxy A8 Star is a good all-round device, but it may find it difficult to compete against the reigning champions of this price range - OnePlus 6, and Asus Zenfone 5Z - that offer even better performance (with the Snapdragon 845), and better software
  • ColorOS still has some bloatware though, and is not quite as clean/simple as stock Android
