2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Absolutely gorgeous, slick design, which is truly all-screen, and zero bezels - with a punch hole for the front camera
  • Top quality build
  • Feels great in the hand thanks to curved sides on the front and back
  • More compact and easier to handle than the Galaxy S10+
  • The new in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor also works well, and even with wet/greasy fingers - plus it's more secure than the 2D optical sensor on the likes of the OnePlus 6T, since it creates a 3D map of your finger
  • There is also lightning fast face unlock
  • Brilliant, killer display - the new quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display on the Galaxy S10 Plus is Samsung’s best display yet and arguably the best smartphone display yet, and absolutely immersive, with its all-screen design
  • Dynamic Tone Mapping delivers enhanced brightness and a wider color range and Samsung has worked to reduce blue light emission, which can be harmful for your eyes
  • The Galaxy S10’s panel also gets plenty bright at 625 nits of peak brightness
  • The OneUI software on the Galaxy S10 is slick and streamlined as promised, and fairly easy to use - it's one of the better Android UIs you will come across - in fact, it is arguably the best custom Android skin after Oxygen OS, and that’s a huge deal for the Samsung brand
  • With the power beast Exynos 9820 chip inside, the Galaxy S10 is simply the fastest Android phone yet - and only a shade behind Apple's iPhone XR/XS - it will steamroll through anything you throw at it - and gameplay in even the most complex games is smooth like butter
  • There is also a new set of features Samsung calls “Intelligent Performance” - using artificial intelligence, the Galaxy S10 lineup can automatically and continuously optimize battery, CPU, RAM, and even device temperature based on what you’re doing with the phone at any given time - Intelligent Performance also learns when you use certain apps over time, and it can pre-load them in the background based on time and location - this way, your most frequently used apps are lightning-fast to launch
  • Continuing Samsung's tradition of including some excellent cameras on its flagships, the 4 cameras on the S10 (3 rear + 1 front) pack quite some punch are are easily among the best on any phone available currently - taking the top spots along with the Pixel 3/XL and the iPhone XS/Max
  • The three cameras in the rear include a 12-MP dual-pixel main shooter with a variable aperture (f/1.5, f/2.4), a 12-MP telephoto lens (f/2.4) with a 2x optical zoom and an ultra-wide 16-MP camera (f/2.2) that gives you a 123-degree view
  • The ultra-wide angle lens on the S10 Plus can produce dramatic-looking photos, giving you a more captivating view of almost any scene
  • If you like portraits, you’ll like the Live Focus effects Samsung has added to the mix - you can choose from Blur, Spin, Zoom and Color point (which puts the main subject in color and the background in black and white) - you can also apply these effects to portraits or selfies after you shoot
  • Low light photography is pretty strong too, though not quite to the level of the Pixel 3
  • The front camera is pretty good too (though portraits aren't as good as on the S10+)
  • Video recording is top-notch too, especially with the new 'Super Steady' mode - that produces the kind of smooth tracking shots you’d see in a movie
  • Includes a headphone jack, something that's not that easy to find among flagships today
  • Has pretty powerful speakers (though they are not up to the level of the the stereo sound from the iPhone XS Max which delivers more robust bass and richer audio overall)
  • Good battery life with a 3400mAh battery, an optimized processor, and AI based 'Adaptive Battery' chops
  • The handy PowerShare feature lets you use the back of the S10 to wirelessly charge other phones and gadgets that use the Qi standard (including the iPhones XS, and Galaxy Buds)
  • The Galaxy S10 is easily one of the best Android phones money can buy, with a slick design, a gorgeous display, blazing fast performance, an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, further improved cameras and good battery life
  • Top end flagship build quality - the S20 Plus is a fine piece of hardware that exudes quality and craftsmanship
  • The front looks absolutely gorgeous with an almost edge to edge screen and just a single punch-hole at the top centre - the front glass is slightly less curved along the side edges than previous S series phones
  • The phone is sealed tight and carries an IP68 rating, so you can accidentally dunk it in some water and it’ll survive
  • Stunning 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen that is the best you can buy on any phone right now - the sharpness of the display is simply outstanding with eye-popping clarity
  • The 120Hz refresh rate gives the screen a luscious smoothness that has to be seen to be believed, you’ve got a screen that simply dominates every other panel on the market
  • The screen is also HDR10+ certified, which means the right content will deliver incredible dynamic range - the HDR10 movies on Netflix look really impressive
  • Running the Galaxy S20 Plus is Samsung's OneUI 2 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well thought-out experiences
  • Powering the Galaxy S20 Plus is the Samsung's own Exynos 990, which is one of the best CPUs available in the market, just a shade behind the Apple's A13 - the phone feels fast all the time, no matter what content or app you throw at the S20 Plus, it devours the calculations and offers buttery smooth performance
  • Samsung gave the Galaxy S20 Plus an impressive quad-camera system on the rear - the standard lens boasts a 12MP sensor, joined by an ultra wide-angle 12MP camera, an optical telephoto 64MP camera, and a time-of-flight camera to help process depth information
  • The primary 12MP camera gives you crisp detailed images with the good dynamic range that Samsung’s cameras are known for and the colours are wonderful
  • 64MP telephoto lens is capable of 3x lossless zoom and up to 30x digital zoom - the S20 Plus’s mix of sophisticated hardware and software deliver a precise images that are much clearer than anything else in the market (the 100x zoom is not present in the S20 and S20 Plus)
  • The S20 Plus’s 12MP Ultra-wide lens churns out exceptional results, delivering eye-catching shots, even in challenging lighting conditions
  • The low-light shots turn impressive, even in incredibly dark situations, the clarity is quite impressive, and the colours are perfect with little noise - the night mode further improves the quality with brighter and colourful images (though, the Pixel and iPhones still do a slightly better job in low light)
  • The most standout camera feature on the S20 Plus is Single Take mode - when engaged, Single Take records a 10-second video and snaps multiple images, giving you an entire gallery of options to choose from and share
  • Video recording with the phone looks amazing - it’s sharp, colourful, properly exposed, and on-point when it comes to white balance - video also supports live focus mode, this uses the ToF camera to help judge depth and create a portrait-like effect when capturing video - it is also capable of capturing 8K videos (though, the use case for 8K is very limited)
  • The Galaxy S20 Plus has improved ten-fold in Live Focus mode - the S20 Plus captures very realistic photos and is a massive step up from the portrait mode in Samsung’s prior phones (though, iPhone 11 series is still the champ in portrait shots)
  • The 10MP selfie camera does a fine job - you get a clear view of your pores in good light, and the target resolution dips in low light to keep images clean and bright
  • A pair of USB-C headphones is included in the box
  • Very good stereo speakers
  • Good battery life with the massive 4500 mAh cell - you will get a comfortable one day of use with heavy to moderate use
  • Sufficient fast charging with the supplied 25W charger - it boosts the battery by 50% after just 27 minutes
  • Also supports 15W wireless charging, and it can fill the battery to 50% in just 35 minutes on a charging pad
  • It also supports wireless reverse charging and can charge other phones or accessories that support wireless charging
  • The Galaxy S20 Plus, actually has identical capabilities to the smaller S20, but is for those who want a bit more screen space without paying for the top-of-the-line S20 Ultra - it may well end up being the best selling of the three - it has a gorgeous screen, classy hardware, wicked performance, good battery life, and capable cameras, and the Samsung's name - if what the S20 Plus offer is what you're looking for, go buy it (though, it’s also huge and heavy)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The punch hole for the front camera can be a bit distracting at times - especially when you’re using an app with a white background like Gmail - whether you prefer this approach to a 'full screen' device or the water-drop notch approach may be down to personal preference - while notches are usually larger, they still maintain the symmetry of the phone - so it's a bit of a toss-up - though, just like a notch, this is something you quickly get used to, and ultimately stop even noticing
  • Overall, while the cameras on the Galaxy S10 are right up there with the very best, they are still a shade behind the Pixel 3 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, in terms of low-light photography
  • While fast charging is of course supported, the charging speeds over the Adaptive Fast Charging protocol aren't all that impressive for a 2019 flagship - it will take you 30 minutes to charge the phone to about 36% with the included 15W charger in the box - it's a decent speed but the fast charging standards of the likes of OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo are significantly better
  • There is still strong competition though - while the S10 is a great, powerful all-rounder, if you are looking for the best camera, you should consider the Pixel 3, and if you are looking for even more powerful performance, brighter display, or prefer the iOS ecosystem, you should look at the iPhone XS
  • Aesthetically, the Galaxy S20 Plus looks dull, there's no flair in the design, like the Aura Glow option Samsung introduced last year, which looked fascinating - the huge camera module doesn't help either
  • The in-display fingerprint sensor is unreliable - it’s slower than other sensors on competition and far less accurate
  • It is also huge and requires two hands to use most of the time - it doesn’t fit well in pockets, despite its slippery surfaces, and more or less requires a case for protection, which will only make it bigger
  • Overall, while Samsung has created flagship lever cameras that compete at the top level and comes out as champs in many situations, they are still slightly behind the iPhone cameras, that are more consistent
  • That said, if you're someone who enjoy smaller phones that are easy to carry around and have near to no compromise, get the smaller Galaxy S20, you'll get the same fast processor, 120Hz display and improved cameras with a handy form factor
