Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 128GB is a significantly better phone, but the Vivo V20 Pro is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But if budget is not a constraint, we recommend the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 128GB.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • IP68 dust and water resistant
  • Bright, sharp, and clean looking 6.5-inch display FHD+ AMOLED display - the S20 FE’s screen looks good, with bold colours and high contrast ratios
  • Sufficiently bright and usable under direct sunlight
  • The display features a variable refresh rate which goes up to 120 Hz, most of the time it simply looks luscious and smooth
  • Running the Galaxy Note Ultra is Samsung's OneUI 2.5 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well-thought-out experiences - the animations everywhere looks fluid with the high refresh rate display
  • The S20 FE houses the Samsung's own Exynos 990, which is one of the best CPUs available in the market - apps open quickly, scavenging through files is swift and multi-tasking is a breeze, it is a top-tier experience
  • Very good triple camera setup - a 12MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 8MP telephoto camera
  • The S20 FE takes solid shots with the main camera - colours look good overall, white balance is accurate, the focus is sharp, producing clean shots with little or no noise in daylight
  • The S20 FE’s ultra-wide camera squeezes in twice as much of the scene you’re shooting compared to the main snapper - it captures shots at 0.5x zoom, compared to 0.6x on most other phones, and quality is also good
  • The telephoto camera facilitates 3x optical and 30x digital zoom - it is fairly good at closing the distance without losing the details
  • The S20 FE inherits the Single Take mode from its more premium siblings - when engaged, Single Take records a 10-second video and snaps multiple images, giving you an entire gallery of options to choose from and share
  • The low-light shots turn impressive, even in incredibly dark situations, the clarity is quite impressive, and the colours are perfect with little noise - the night mode further improves the quality with brighter and colourful images
  • Live focus mode (Samsung's portrait mode) produces decent results on the S20 FE - the phone delivers good subject separation and natural-looking background blur
  • Selfies from the 32MP front camera look pretty good at the default settings, focus, colour, and white balance were mostly good - with Live Focus mode for selfies you get a range of controls for background effects and edits, and accurate and appropriate background blur
  • Video quality from the FE's main cam is decent, while 1080p footage is comparable to the S20s', 4K on the FE is notably inferior in terms of sharpness and detail - other than that, the videos have likeable colours and dynamic range is excellent
  • Good set of stereo speaker - the earpiece double-ups as the second speaker, and it sounds clean at max volume with well-defined highs and vocals, decent lows
  • Good battery life from the 4500 mAh cell - the S20 FE can last a little over a full day of rigorous use and that too with the 120Hz smooth display
  • 15W wireless charging is a nice feature to have at any price point, which matches that of the wired charger
  • The Galaxy S20 FE is a Samsung flagship at the core at a friendlier price, which comes with pros that include solid performance, excellent battery life, and straightforward software, cameras that are on par with the competition
  • The design feels fresh and vibrant - phone's sleek profile is eye-catching, with a matte back glass, it is one of the nicest looking phones for the price
  • The phone looks quite flawless from the back, it features a rather flashy back cover
  • The Vivo V20 Pro is one of the lightest around in this price segment, and at 7.38mm in thickness, it is surprisingly slim
  • The power button has a texture to give it a more distinguished feeling
  • The in-display fingerprint scanner, as well as face recognition, are quick to unlock the V20
  • The display is a gorgeous 6.44-inch AMOLED FHD+ panel which promises vibrant and life-like colours - the contrast is impressive and it also supports HDR10 for high-quality video playback
  • It gets bright enough for using the device even under harsh sunlight
  • The Vivo V20 Pro comes with Android 11 out of the box, with Vivo's new Funtouch OS 11 - this new skin by Vivo brings several bells and whistles, and a much cleaner, simpler interface - there's an improved dark mode and tons of customisation options
  • Very Good performance from the Snapdragon 765G SoC - it is a capable chip that can handle everything you throw at it - gaming is no issue, it takes care of casual titles as well heavy 3D games like COD with ease
  • Good triple cameras for the price - a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 2MP mono camera
  • Photos shot in bright sunny conditions turned out well - images clicked using the device generally come out with life-like colours and packing good detail
  • The Ultra-wide camera adds fun new perspectives, it can take dramatic super-wide-angle photos with lesser details than the main camera - besides, it can also take Macro shots, which come out with good detail, and you end up with a higher resolution image compared to what most dedicated macro cameras produce
  • Portraits have good edge detection and you do get the option to set the intensity of the blur effect - beautification is enabled by default which smoothens skin textures
  • Low-light camera performance is good, photos have little noise and details in brighter areas are decent - enabling Night mode improves the level of detail
  • The 44MP selfie camera is very good at what it does - daylight selfies are sharp with accurate colours and good details, there's also an Eye Autofocus option that keeps the subject in sharp focus - portrait selfies are possible and you can set the level of blur before taking a shot
  • The Vivo V20 Pro has an additional 8MP ultra-wide camera at the front for all your group photos - it manages to capture a lot wider view of the scene
  • Video recording in daylight is good, video recording tops out at 4K for the primary as well as the selfie shooter - footage shot in 4K, as well as 1080p, is stabilised (though, video shot in low light has a shimmer effect at both resolutions, which isn't good)
  • Overall, cameras are one of the highlights of the phone and they can take on any other capable camera phone at this price
  • Good battery life from the 4000 mAh battery - it can easily manage to keep the phone going on for around a day on moderate-heavy use
  • Charging is quick with the supplied 33W FlashCharge charger - it takes the V20 to 98 percent in an hour
  • The V20 Pro is all about: selfies, looks, and raw performance - it adds valuable upgrades over the V20 and manages to provide an excellent value for money
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Boxier in-hand feel when comparing against other S20 phones - not very comfortable
  • Not-so-premium design - the S20 FE looks more like the Samsung A series phone than the S series - the ‘Glasstic’ back and thick front bezels make it look a bit cheap
  • No headphone jack
  • Average fast charging from the 15W adapter included in the box - the phone supports up to 25W fast charging, but for that, you'll have to buy a compatible adapter separately
  • Though, if you want a more premium-looking phone with all the bells and whistles, OnePlus 8 and the Xiaomi Mi 10 are solid phones for the price
  • Because of its slim profile, the Vivo V20 Pro is a bit slippery
  • The front looks a bit dated with a wide notch, which even cheaper phones have abandoned
  • Though, it isn't a high-refresh-rate panel
  • No 3.5mm headphone jack
