Our Opinion

The Vivo V17 is a significantly better phone, but the Vivo V11 Pro is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But if budget is not a constraint, we recommend the Vivo V17.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Super stylish design - the gradient color on the back adds the touch of flair, and plays with light in interesting ways - and then there is the 'tear-drop' notch - there are no two ways about it, the Vivo V11 is a striking-looking device
  • Being polycarbonate (as opposed to the more common metal/glass designs of today), the phone is pretty light too, and likely more durable over the long term
  • Another key USP of the phone is the in-display fingerprint scanner - it works just fine - although, like other such scanners - it's not quite as fast a physical scanner - but even to include such cutting edge tech on a phone at this price is quite an achievement for Vivo
  • Vivo has improved its infrared face unlocking too, using 1024 facial feature points to unlock your device, even in the dark
  • Great, tall AMOLED screen, with the tiny teardrop notch - manages to achieve a fantastic 91.3 percent ratio of screen/body - that ensures that even at 6.41 inches of display, the V11 never feels like a large phone - also colors are rich, the contrast is great, the blacks are suitably deep, and the V11 gets plenty bright enough outdoors - there is also an always-on display option in the lock screen settings that you can use
  • Vivo’s FunTouch OS UI is pretty decent, looks a lot like iOS and delivers a lot of additional functionality - including gesture navigation, app privacy, duplicate apps, gesture shortcuts, and custom shortcut for long-pressing the volume down button
  • Solid all-round performance backed by the efficient Snapdragon 660 and 6GB of RAM - it's butter smooth throughout
  • Very good set of rear dual cameras, especially in daylight (although low light performance is also pretty decent) - the AI chops help, bokeh shots come out good, and overall picture quality is pleasing - all in all, the V11 camera performs admirably for a mid-tier device
  • The selfie camera is good too
  • The single bottom-firing speaker next to the micro-USB port is loud and sounds pretty decent, with generally crisp, clear highs and decent mids
  • Very good battery - the 3400mAh battery on the Vivo V11 lasts at least a day, with heavy use, and a day and a half with more moderate use
  • Quick charging support - Vivo’s Dual Engine Fast Charging tech fills the V11 up in less than an hour and a half
  • On the whole, in the fiercely competitive mid-range market the V11 manages to have a bunch of stand-out features, and is a pretty strong choice - there's not another phone out there for that price to offer under-display fingerprint scanner and a characteristic waterdrop notch - add those gradient paintjobs in the mix and it makes for a very good all-round phone - the phone will compete with the Oppo F9 Pro (it swaps the OLED for an LCD panel, and doesn't have a in-display scanner, but keeps the waterdrop notch, and is cheaper) - of course, there is also the Poco F1 to consider, and if you value sublime performance over stylish looks, then it's a no brainer - but overall, the V11 Pro is still a very good phone on it's own and one with some surprisingly legitimate A.I. smarts
  • Slick, trendy design - with a punch-hole front camera, which is one of the smaller ones on a phone to date
  • The good bit is despite sporting the four cameras, the back panel of the V17 doesn’t look cluttered - the rectangular (vertically) quad-camera module on the top left corner of the back adds to the overall design
  • Amazingly lightweight, for a phone with 4500 mAh battery inside
  • Despite having the same screen size as the V17 Pro model, it very easy to use with just one hand - which was difficult with the V17 Pro
  • Both the in-display fingerprint sensor & Face Unlock are fast and unlock the smartphone quickly
  • Beautiful 6.44-inch, Super AMOLED display with a punch-hole, which gives it an amazing screen-to-body of 91.38 per cent - it’s a delight watching videos on the Vivo V17
  • The full-screen display also get pretty bright in all lighting conditions, exhibits very good viewing angles and punchy colours
  • The Vivo V17 also comes with an always-on display option, which is useful
  • Solid performance with the Snapdragon 675 at the core - every-day use to gaming - it’s all lag-free
  • Good quad-rear camera setup (48MP main camera + 8MP ultra-wide camera + 2MP macro camera + 2MP depth sensor)
  • Pictures shot in bright daylight show a good amount of details and decent colours - Vivo V17 doesn’t pop the colours too much and captures the right colour-shade
  • The ultra-wide-angle lens offers a new perspective - shots look decent (though they are less detailed)
  • The portrait shots also turn out to be good, but the edge detection could have been better
  • Super Macro camera mode shows great details and good colours - the macro mode works best in good lighting conditions
  • The low-light pictures with the V17 turn out well - the Night camera mode of the V17 especially captures better details and colours in low-light conditions compared to the default photo mode
  • The 32MP front camera on the Vivo V17 clicks great selfies in good light
  • The night mode also works for the front camera and again it works pretty well
  • Very good battery life with a large 4500mAh battery - you will easily get about 1.5 days of moderate use
  • 18W fast charging support: it takes around 1.5 hours (approx) to charge the V17 fully with its bundled charger
  • Overall, the V17 is reasonably good value - especially if camera and design are your primary priorities, the Vivo V17 is a solid choice to consider in the under 30k segment - it does well on both those parameters
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The V11’s shiny polycarbonate back panel collects fingerprints very quickly
  • Video recording is decent but could have been better with image stabilization
  • Micro-USB charging (instead of USB-C) is a bit of an odd thing for a phone that is otherwise on on the cutting edge of tech
  • The Software continues to be a relatively weak point for Vivo, with a cluttered Funtouch UI (though it is quite feature-packed)
  • This is certainly not the best performing phone of this price bracket though - you get a much more powerful Snapdragon 730 with the Redmi K20 - in fact, there are the Vivo Z1 Pro and the Vivo Z1X that again cost less and come with a newer Snapdragon 712
  • Low light video though, is below average
  • If you are looking for an all-rounder though, you will have better options around especially in terms of software & performance - you will want to look at the likes of Realme XT, and Redmi K20
