2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Super stylish design - the gradient color on the back adds the touch of flair, and plays with light in interesting ways - and then there is the 'tear-drop' notch - there are no two ways about it, the Vivo V11 is a striking-looking device
- Being polycarbonate (as opposed to the more common metal/glass designs of today), the phone is pretty light too, and likely more durable over the long term
- Another key USP of the phone is the in-display fingerprint scanner - it works just fine - although, like other such scanners - it's not quite as fast a physical scanner - but even to include such cutting edge tech on a phone at this price is quite an achievement for Vivo
- Vivo has improved its infrared face unlocking too, using 1024 facial feature points to unlock your device, even in the dark
- Great, tall AMOLED screen, with the tiny teardrop notch - manages to achieve a fantastic 91.3 percent ratio of screen/body - that ensures that even at 6.41 inches of display, the V11 never feels like a large phone - also colors are rich, the contrast is great, the blacks are suitably deep, and the V11 gets plenty bright enough outdoors - there is also an always-on display option in the lock screen settings that you can use
- Vivo’s FunTouch OS UI is pretty decent, looks a lot like iOS and delivers a lot of additional functionality - including gesture navigation, app privacy, duplicate apps, gesture shortcuts, and custom shortcut for long-pressing the volume down button
- Solid all-round performance backed by the efficient Snapdragon 660 and 6GB of RAM - it's butter smooth throughout
- Very good set of rear dual cameras, especially in daylight (although low light performance is also pretty decent) - the AI chops help, bokeh shots come out good, and overall picture quality is pleasing - all in all, the V11 camera performs admirably for a mid-tier device
- The selfie camera is good too
- The single bottom-firing speaker next to the micro-USB port is loud and sounds pretty decent, with generally crisp, clear highs and decent mids
- Very good battery - the 3400mAh battery on the Vivo V11 lasts at least a day, with heavy use, and a day and a half with more moderate use
- Quick charging support - Vivo’s Dual Engine Fast Charging tech fills the V11 up in less than an hour and a half
- On the whole, in the fiercely competitive mid-range market the V11 manages to have a bunch of stand-out features, and is a pretty strong choice - there's not another phone out there for that price to offer under-display fingerprint scanner and a characteristic waterdrop notch - add those gradient paintjobs in the mix and it makes for a very good all-round phone - the phone will compete with the Oppo F9 Pro (it swaps the OLED for an LCD panel, and doesn't have a in-display scanner, but keeps the waterdrop notch, and is cheaper) - of course, there is also the Poco F1 to consider, and if you value sublime performance over stylish looks, then it's a no brainer - but overall, the V11 Pro is still a very good phone on it's own and one with some surprisingly legitimate A.I. smarts
|
- Premium build & gorgeous design: Dual Gorilla Glass 5 build, with an attractive, striking gradient design
- Modern front panel, with a small notch
- Compact form-factor - fairly easy to use one-handed
- Decent, reasonably accurate under-display fingerprint scanner (it's not the fastest though)
- Large, high-contrast AMOLED display
- Being part of the Android One series, you get a simple/stock Android experience, along with a promise of minimum 2 years of Android updates
- With the powerful Snapdragon 665 at the core, you get smooth dependable performance all-round - it's great for gaming too
- Very good triple camera setup on the rear (48MP primary + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth)
- Images turn out with high level of detail and true-to-life colors - the contrast is also excellent, while the dynamic range is notably wide
- 8MP images with the ultrawide-angle camera are decent too - its per-pixel quality is much lower than the main camera, but the colors are still nice, and noise is minimal
- Portrait mode works well - shots are detailed, with excellent subject separation and convincing faux blur
- Night mode works decently well too
- Excellent selfies too, from the 32MP selfie camera - there is enough detail, the colors are nice, and the images are sharp enough
- Good video recording performance too - both 4K and 1080p videos are sharp and detailed, contrast is excellent, color rendition is quite nice and true to life, and the dynamic range is decent - at 1080p 30fps, there is also EIS, which works well
- Overall, the Mi A3 is easily one of the better camera phones in this price bracket, going head-to-head with excellent camera phones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro
- Very good speaker - loud, with fairly rich and deep sound
- Very good battery life with a large 4030mAH battery - you will comfortably get 1.5 days of use
- Fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0) support, with up to 18W charger
- Overall, the Mi A3 is an all-round good Android One phone, that does well on most counts, and additionally packs a stock Android experience (plus promised updates) - for a lot of users, who value a stock Android experience, and whose main consumption on the phone is images & video, it will be a good bet
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The V11’s shiny polycarbonate back panel collects fingerprints very quickly
- Video recording is decent but could have been better with image stabilization
- Micro-USB charging (instead of USB-C) is a bit of an odd thing for a phone that is otherwise on on the cutting edge of tech
|
- The 720p resolution is on the low side though for a PenTile AMOLED display of that size, and this is the only weak-ish point of the Mi A3 - the screen is not the most ideally suited for long reading or browsing
- The phones ships with a lower 10W charger though, that gives still decent, but not the quickest charging speeds - it recharges from 0 to 28% in 30 mins, while a full charge takes about 150 mins
- But if you tend to do a lot of long reading on your phone, then you might want to consider higher resolution phones in this price bracket (and there are many good ones out there)
