Our Opinion

The Vivo V5 is a slightly better phone, but the Vivo Y69 is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? It’s a close call, but if your budget allows for it, then Vivo V5 might be a slightly better choice.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Looks quite classy, and despite being a large phone, has good ergonomics
  • Slim, and light
  • 20 MP front camera is the defining feature here - it is good (though, not ground-breaking) with field of view large enough to fit a few friends in the frame, and capable of capturing a lot of details such as texture and contrast which is uncommon to find in this price bracket
  • Bright, colourful display that has decent legibility even under direct sunlight (although resolution is on the low side)
  • Good performance in day-to-day use, and multitasking, with 4GB RAM
  • Decent 13 MP rear-facing camera - takes good photos in both well-lit and low-lit conditions - autofocus is decently quick too
  • Good audio quality
  • The speakers are quite loud and clear
  • Decent battery life - the 3, 000 mAh battery is generally good enough for a whole day’s worth of mixed usage
  • On the whole, the Vivo V5 is a good purchase for someone who wants to click a lot of selfies, and consume media on their phone
  • Good build quality
  • Sleek metal unibody design with a premium look and feel
  • The fingerprint scanner integrated in the home button works great
  • The display is bright, and has vivid colours and slim bezels
  • Decent UI overlay over Android - includes features like split screen, one hand mode, long screenshot, app clone - there are a few bloatware apps preloaded but all of them can be uninstalled if required
  • Day to day performance is fairly smooth
  • Very good front camera - comes with a number of features: group selfie mode, face beauty mode, portrait bokeh and live photo (records a few seconds of video along with the photo) - there is also an LED in front that can be used as a flash or fill light for video - overall image quality from the front camera is great — in daylight as well as indoors
  • Good battery life - comfortably lasts the full day
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The body, though it looks good, does feel very plasticky and not as well built as the Lenovo Z2 Plus or even the Samsung J7
  • The custom UI on top of Android feels a little cluttered (though with a rich feature-set)
  • While the overall performance is good, it's definitely not chart leading in this price bracket - heavy games/apps like Modern Combat 5 or Asphalt 8 are not ideal for the phone - and the phone can be a bit laggy after using the camera burst mode
  • Front camera is good overall, but tends of over-expose pictures a little bit
  • The lack of a USB Type-C port, and quick charging, is also a negative
  • Screen resolution could have been better
  • The performance is decent in regular use and simple games, but there are certainly phones with better chipsets in this price bracket
  • Rear camera performance is decent in daylight with sharp details and rich colours, but indoors the images don’t have much detail and low light images have lots of noise
  • Video recording from the rear camera is limited to 1080p resolution only (some other phones in this price bracket now offer 4K resolution)
  • Overall, the Vivo Y69 is a phone meant only for the selfie loving crowd (otherwise there are many overall better phones), and even within that segment it has tough competition from the likes of Gionee A1
