2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Very good, premium design, with top-notch metal construction
  • The overall form factor and weight remain quite ergonomic
  • Very good, balanced display - good responsiveness, brightness levels, and sunlight legibility
  • Runs clean, clutter-free and simple stock Android out of the box - and comes with the 'Android One series' update promise!
  • Strong, dependable performance, powered by a power-efficient Snapdragon 625 - running on stock Android eliminates some of the overheads on the processor and the phone presents a super smooth and lag free experience on general day-to-day things - it’s solid and will suffice for most except the most demanding of users
  • Good, solid dual-camera setup - Xiaomi’s stereo mode is its take on Apple’s “portrait mode”, and its task is to blur the background - the final effects are commendable most of the times - sometimes even better than much more expensive phones like the OnePlus 5 - making it easily the best dual camera system on a budget
  • Even in auto mode, the Mi A1 takes rich images with good levels of detail and colour saturation
  • There is also a very effective pro mode which even allows the user to individually choose between the wide angle camera and the telephoto lens - making for a very compelling camera package
  • Xiaomi also offers 2x optical zoom with this device - and the results are quite good
  • Video recording is decent too - it can shoot in 4k, and has time lapse and slow motion modes
  • The front 5-megapixel camera for selfies is decent too, though nothing exceptional
  • Good audio quality and volume via both headphones and the speaker
  • Good, dependable battery life - comfortably lasts a work day
  • Takes about 2 hours to charge fully - which is a decent charging speed
  • On the whole, if you are only concerned about performance and battery life, then the Redmi Note 4 may be a better choice, and if you care most about low light camera performance, then the Moto G5S Plus is at the top of the pack, but for an overall dependable phone with a dual camera setup, and stock Android experience, the Mi A1 is a brilliant choice
  • Premium build & gorgeous design: Dual Gorilla Glass 5 build, with an attractive, striking gradient design
  • Modern front panel, with a small notch
  • Compact form-factor - fairly easy to use one-handed
  • Decent, reasonably accurate under-display fingerprint scanner (it's not the fastest though)
  • Large, high-contrast AMOLED display
  • Being part of the Android One series, you get a simple/stock Android experience, along with a promise of minimum 2 years of Android updates
  • With the powerful Snapdragon 665 at the core, you get smooth dependable performance all-round - it's great for gaming too
  • Very good triple camera setup on the rear (48MP primary + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth)
  • Images turn out with high level of detail and true-to-life colors - the contrast is also excellent, while the dynamic range is notably wide
  • 8MP images with the ultrawide-angle camera are decent too - its per-pixel quality is much lower than the main camera, but the colors are still nice, and noise is minimal
  • Portrait mode works well - shots are detailed, with excellent subject separation and convincing faux blur
  • Night mode works decently well too
  • Excellent selfies too, from the 32MP selfie camera - there is enough detail, the colors are nice, and the images are sharp enough
  • Good video recording performance too - both 4K and 1080p videos are sharp and detailed, contrast is excellent, color rendition is quite nice and true to life, and the dynamic range is decent - at 1080p 30fps, there is also EIS, which works well
  • Overall, the Mi A3 is easily one of the better camera phones in this price bracket, going head-to-head with excellent camera phones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro
  • Very good speaker - loud, with fairly rich and deep sound
  • Very good battery life with a large 4030mAH battery - you will comfortably get 1.5 days of use
  • Fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0) support, with up to 18W charger
  • Overall, the Mi A3 is an all-round good Android One phone, that does well on most counts, and additionally packs a stock Android experience (plus promised updates) - for a lot of users, who value a stock Android experience, and whose main consumption on the phone is images & video, it will be a good bet
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The performance is solid and dependable but not the absolute best in this price bracket - that status belongs to the likes of the Redmi Note 4
  • The camera is quite good in daylight conditions, but falls behind in low light prowess compared to say the Moto G5 Plus or Samsung Galaxy J7 Max - low light photos can sometimes be blurry and they take considerable time to process
  • Battery life is again strong, but not the best in this price bracket - that is again a position that's held by Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4
  • The 720p resolution is on the low side though for a PenTile AMOLED display of that size, and this is the only weak-ish point of the Mi A3 - the screen is not the most ideally suited for long reading or browsing
  • The phones ships with a lower 10W charger though, that gives still decent, but not the quickest charging speeds - it recharges from 0 to 28% in 30 mins, while a full charge takes about 150 mins
  • But if you tend to do a lot of long reading on your phone, then you might want to consider higher resolution phones in this price bracket (and there are many good ones out there)

  1. Gets many things right ...but the 720p screen makes the Mi A3 more of a niche device as it is best suited for gaming and videos instead of browsing and reading
