2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium build & gorgeous design: Dual Gorilla Glass 5 build, with an attractive, striking gradient design
  • Modern front panel, with a small notch
  • Compact form-factor - fairly easy to use one-handed
  • Decent, reasonably accurate under-display fingerprint scanner (it's not the fastest though)
  • Large, high-contrast AMOLED display
  • Being part of the Android One series, you get a simple/stock Android experience, along with a promise of minimum 2 years of Android updates
  • With the powerful Snapdragon 665 at the core, you get smooth dependable performance all-round - it's great for gaming too
  • Very good triple camera setup on the rear (48MP primary + 8MP ultra-wide + 2MP depth)
  • Images turn out with high level of detail and true-to-life colors - the contrast is also excellent, while the dynamic range is notably wide
  • 8MP images with the ultrawide-angle camera are decent too - its per-pixel quality is much lower than the main camera, but the colors are still nice, and noise is minimal
  • Portrait mode works well - shots are detailed, with excellent subject separation and convincing faux blur
  • Night mode works decently well too
  • Excellent selfies too, from the 32MP selfie camera - there is enough detail, the colors are nice, and the images are sharp enough
  • Good video recording performance too - both 4K and 1080p videos are sharp and detailed, contrast is excellent, color rendition is quite nice and true to life, and the dynamic range is decent - at 1080p 30fps, there is also EIS, which works well
  • Overall, the Mi A3 is easily one of the better camera phones in this price bracket, going head-to-head with excellent camera phones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro
  • Very good speaker - loud, with fairly rich and deep sound
  • Very good battery life with a large 4030mAH battery - you will comfortably get 1.5 days of use
  • Fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0) support, with up to 18W charger
  • Overall, the Mi A3 is an all-round good Android One phone, that does well on most counts, and additionally packs a stock Android experience (plus promised updates) - for a lot of users, who value a stock Android experience, and whose main consumption on the phone is images & video, it will be a good bet
  • Beautiful, 'shimmering' rear (plastic) panel, and a modern, notch-less 6.5-inch OLED screen - easily one of the best looking phones in this price bracket
  • The notch-less display spans almost edge to edge, with a pop-up selfie camera mechanism (which is quite something to have, in this price bracket)
  • Fairly fast in-display fingerprint reader
  • The pop-up camera on the Realme X has a very quick ejection and retraction mechanism, which makes face recognition work pretty seamlessly too
  • Very good 6.5-inch OLED screen - colors are lively, with deep blacks
  • The lack of a notch really helps make the screen appear immersive, and consuming content on the screen is a pleasure
  • ColorOS UI is now much more streamlined than before - there’s also now an app drawer, and a useful shortcut menu accessed by swiping from the sides
  • The gesture navigation is nice and intuitive too
  • Thankfully, it's not ad-strewn either, like some of the recent phones from Xiaomi
  • Very good performance backed by the powerful Snapdragon 710 chipset - everything from daily use to high-end games is smooth
  • GPU performance is an especially strong point of the Snapdragon 710, so if you are into gaming, the phone tends to comfortably outperform rivals
  • Very good set of dual rear cameras (48MP+5MP) and front camera (16MP)
  • Good overall image quality in daylight, and fairly good quality in low-light as well
  • Night mode is pretty effective too
  • Very good portraits
  • Pretty great selfies too, from the 16MP front camera
  • Realme’s EIS does a solid job of stabilization during videos at up to 1080p/30fps
  • Support for 4K video recording (without EIS though)
  • Overall, the Realme X is among the best camera setups of this price bracket, comparable to the excellent cameras on the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro
  • The Dolby Atmos-boosted speaker sounds pretty rich and gets fairly loud
  • Good battery life with a 3750 mAh cell - you will comfortably get a day of use, even with heavy usage
  • The class-leading VOOC fast-charging nicely complements the long battery life - it fills a completely depleted battery in 1:18h and it's at the 50% mark 30 minutes into it - which are some excellent numbers
  • The Realme X looks like an incredible value package, no matter how you look at it, and will inevitably disrupt its price bracket in a big way - what you get is top-end specs, a 'full screen' AMOLED display with a pop-up selfie camera, very good performance, an excellent set of cameras, and super fast charging - you can't ask for more
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The 720p resolution is on the low side though for a PenTile AMOLED display of that size, and this is the only weak-ish point of the Mi A3 - the screen is not the most ideally suited for long reading or browsing
  • The phones ships with a lower 10W charger though, that gives still decent, but not the quickest charging speeds - it recharges from 0 to 28% in 30 mins, while a full charge takes about 150 mins
  • But if you tend to do a lot of long reading on your phone, then you might want to consider higher resolution phones in this price bracket (and there are many good ones out there)
  • ColorOS still has some bloatware though, and is not quite as clean/simple as stock Android
Expert Reviews
  1. Gets many things right ...but the 720p screen makes the Mi A3 more of a niche device as it is best suited for gaming and videos instead of browsing and reading
