2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Rugged design, with top-notch fit and finish - one of the most solidly built phones in recent times - comes with a polycarbonate chassis instead of a glass finish more commonly seen in this price bracket these days - what that means is that it looks less premium, but at the same time will be much more durable over the long term
- Excellent IR based facial recognition - which works in the dark too (like the iPhone X) - the unlock time is just 0.1ms - in fact it works so well, that you will likely end up not using the fingerprint sensor at all (which itself, works very well too, in case you do want to use it)
- Very good 6.18-inch FHD+ 19:9 display - excellent brightness levels ensure that there are zero issues with reading the contents on the screen under harsh sunlight as well
- MIUI has always been one of the most refined Android UIs out there, and continues to get even better - it offers a good combination of aesthetics, useful added functionality, lots of customizability, and optimization - and now it also has an app drawer like stock Android (there are some preinstalled apps like UC Browser, Amazon, and Facebook, to Microsoft apps like Word and Excel, but all of these apps can be uninstalled if you don't need them)
- And as is the case with all phones running Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, the POCO F1 offers Treble, and POCO says it will honor the warranty for those users that tinker with custom ROMs - in fact POCO is actively encouraging the modding community to make custom ROMs for the phone - which means that (unofficial) Android updates will continue to be available for the phone for a long, long time to come
- Top-end performance, backed by the scorching Snapdragon 845 - the speed here is right up there with the likes of the OnePlus 6, and other flagships - it delivers blistering performance day in, day out - coupled with a well optimized MIUI, you are going to get butter smooth performance all through
- To further differentiate the F1, POCO has incorporating liquid cooling in the device, which is designed to boost sustained peak performance times - there's a vapor chamber next to the chipset that siphons heat and dissipates it over a wider area, preventing the phone from overheating during prolonged gaming sessions - what that means is you could play graphics-heavy games for hours on end, and the phone doesn't warm up in any significant amount
- Good dual rear camera setup, with plenty of AI chops - photos taken in daylight come out with plenty of detail and high dynamic range - bokeh shots come out well too - and low-light shots are decent too - overall the camera is pretty close to that on the OnePlus 6 in overall quality (and the OnePlus 6 costs much more!)
- Good front camera too - delivers some great vanity shots, and is surprisingly good in portrait mode, getting most of the edges right, and blurring out background beautifully
- Video recording quality is pretty good too, with quality 4K and 1080p shots
- Good call quality and dual VoLTE support
- The speaker is one of the best you'll find at this price point, and the F1 gets loud — playing games and watching videos is a delight on this phone - a major reason for that has to do with the fact that the phone has Dirac HD Sound — a mainstay on Xiaomi phones in the past - the earpiece also doubles up as a secondary speaker
- The F1 is in a class of its own when it comes to battery life, outclassing even the battery powerhouse Redmi Note 5 - thanks to the combination of the 10nm Snapdragon 845, the 4000mah battery, and well-optimized MIUI - you'll easily get two days' worth of use out of the F1
- The F1 supports Quick Charge 3.0, and Poco is bundling an 18W charger in the box - it takes just under two hours to charge the device fully, and you'll be able to go from flat to a 50% charge in just under 30 minutes
- Combine the excellent battery life + the excellent fast charging, there isn't a single flagship that comes close to the F1 in terms of battery life
- On the whole, the Poco F1 gives incredible performance at an unbeatable price - nothing comes close - and some great devices like ASUS' ZenFone 5Z, and the OnePlus 6 start to look expensive in comparison (which is saying something) - the F1 is a durable all-rounder flagship that will serve you well in all areas - and it comes right now with an incredible value-for-money proposition
|
- Fresh, bright and vibrant design, with a gleaming, reflective rear panel - you'll see light play across the surface when using this phone, giving the feeling of depth
- The distinctive new camera bump design plays into the theme of symmetry - this is a beautiful design touch that sets the Redmi Note 9 series apart and makes this phone and its siblings recognisable
- The front of the phone looks modern and defies expectations for its price category
- Fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power key, and it is swift at unlocking the phone
- Xiaomi's trademark infrared emitter is on the top and can be used to control several home appliances
- There's also a notification and charging LED hidden in the earpiece, a rarity to find in modern smartphones
- Bright, crisp and large 6.67-inch IPS display with a tall 20:9 aspect ratio - the panel delivers punchy and vibrant colours and the large screen work nicely for consuming videos and games
- MIUI is one of the more refined and smooth Android skins around, and has a lot of customisation/theming options - there are ample features for power users - from gestures to the ability to switch around button layouts as well as a robust home screen customisation experience, you can make the phone your own
- Class-leading performance for the price backed by the snappy Snapdragon 720G - the Redmi Note 9 Pro is more than powerful enough to handle anything from basic calls and messaging up to heavy 3D gaming, with no trouble whatsoever, multitasking is also smooth and trouble-free
- Decent quad cameras for the price - a 48MP primary shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor
- In daylight, the primary camera takes reasonably good shots - Xiaomi has opted for a very natural-looking colour science, the colour temperature and white balance are spot-on which is very good to see, and the dynamic range isn't too bad either (though, there is a certain softness to images, which can be fixed with a software update)
- The ultra-wide-angle mode works well to capture a wide frame without much effort, and the quality is decent
- Xiaomi has done a particularly good job at optimising the portrait mode, and the phone does a fantastic job at edge-detection, creating a natural-looking blur
- The macro camera delivers much higher quality shots than from most other 2MP macro cameras
- The 16MP front camera is fairly good in the daytime as well as at night - details are good, and portrait shots had nicely blurred backgrounds
- Very good battery life with the 5020 mAh battery - with ordinary use, the Redmi Note 9 Pro easily lasts through a full day and nearly half of the second day before needing a recharge
- Decent fast charging with the 18W fast charger in the box, takes nearly 2 hours to fill the phone (though this isn't the fastest charging phone and the Realme 6's 30W charging is much better)
- The Redmi Note 9 Pro which succeeds at delivering value, a decent camera, class-leading internals and beautiful design for the low price is certainly tempting - if flat-out performance at a low price is what you want, the Redmi Note 9 Pro delivers the best bang-for-the-buck
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The polycarbonate design means that it definitely doesn't look quite as premium as the OnePlus 6, or the Zenfone 5Z (although what it lacks in looks it makes up for in durability, so it depends on what you value)
- The display has fairly significant bezels around it, compared to the tall displays on other flagship phones
- Low light performance is one area where it's not quite as good as the OnePlus 6 camera, since it lacks OIS
- Like other recent Xiaomi phones, the Poco F1 does not support HD streaming from Netflix and Amazon Prime (the content is streamed at max 540p), due to a certification issue, so you might want to keep that in mind if you plan to use these services on your phone
|
- At 8.8mm thick and 209g in weight, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is bulky and unwieldy
- It is a standard 60Hz panel and doesn't have a high refresh rate - this is a missed opportunity that puts the Redmi Note 9 Pro on the back foot compared to its peers
- It continues to pack a lot of bloat though - you get many pre-installed applications with wide-ranging requirements for user permissions
- Low light photography is average, images are grainy with digital artefacts and splotches creating a nearly unusable shot
- Overall, this is not the best camera setup at this price and this time Realme has done a better job which with its Realme 6 which offer better cameras at this price
- However, the Realme 6 out-specs the Redmi Note 9 Pro with its high refresh-rate 90Hz display panel, as well as the inclusion of a 64MP camera that genuinely takes better images, and the phone supports faster 30W charging as well
