2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Very good build quality
  • Nice looking plastic design, with a matte finish (though it's not quite as stylish and modern as the Realme C2, with the company's trademark diamond design and dewdrop notch)
  • Matte finish means it's easier to keep the phone's body clean and also doesn't highlight scratches
  • It is also a pretty compact phone - if you like smaller phones, you will like the Redmi 7A - it fits well in hands
  • Splash proof
  • Fast face unlock
  • Decent 5.45-inch IPS display with good viewing angles
  • MIUI is one of the more refined Android UIs, and packs many features like 'dark mode', 'reading mode' etc - this time the ads are relatively less intrusive too, compared to recent Redmi phones (although they are still there)
  • Pretty decent performance with the new Snapdragon 439 processor - day-to-day use is fairly smooth, and simple games run well
  • Overall processor performance is pretty similar compared to its main competitor, the Realme C2
  • Decent set of rear (12MP) and front cameras (5MP), for the price bracket
  • In outdoor situations specially, the cameras deliver good results with pretty good details and colours
  • Overall, the camera performance is similar to the other "relatively good" camera phone for the ultra-budget category, the Realme C2
  • Very good battery life with a large 4000mAH battery - you can easily get up to 1.5 days of use
  • The Xiaomi Redmi 7A is the first Xiaomi phone to come with two years of warranty
  • Overall, the Redmi 7A is a pretty solid ultra-budget option from the Xiaomi camp - if you don't care much for having a stylish design, and your performance requirements are basic, it's a good, reliable option to go for
  • Looks charmingly cute with a nice, compact form factor - a rarity among smartphones these days - this is a phone that fits in your jeans pocket perfectly
  • Comfortable in-hand feel
  • Good build quality, with a durable plastic body
  • Decent 5-inch HD display with screen resolution of 720p, with fairly good brightness levels
  • Runs on Google's Android Go software (a lighter version of Android meant for ultra-low budget smartphones), which means everything is simple and clutter-free
  • Pretty decent day-to-day performance with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset inside, and some good optimisation on Xiaomi's behalf - if you use it for calls, sending WhatsApp messages, browsing Facebook, scrolling through Twitter, and playing simple games like Subway Surfers and Temple Run 2, it's able to handle things quite smoothly
  • Decent rear and front cameras for the price bracket
  • Pictures clicked with the Redmi Go look decent, especially when shot in good light - they have fair amount of details and reasonable colours
  • Good battery life with a combination of a 3000mAh battery + small, low-res screen - you will comfortably get a day of use, with moderate to heavy usage
  • Overall, the Redmi Go is a good 'first smartphone' purchase and does all the basics quite well, leading to a good user experience
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • While the design is pretty decent, it does looks a bit old-school with the large bezels
  • Sunlight legibility could have been better
  • 2GB RAM is somewhat limiting in terms of multitasking performance
  • Low light performance is expectedly average though
  • The screen does have pretty thick bezels - although that's to be expected in such a low priced phone
  • There are some pre-loaded apps though like Amazon, Mint browser, Mi community, and others - which end up taking precious space on the phone (some can be uninstalled, but some can't)
  • It will face some stiff competition though from the ultra-budget 'full Android' phones like Asus Zenfone Lite L1, Infinix Smart 2, and Redmi 6A which offer better hardware for a only a slightly higher price
