2-minute Review [Positives] |
- In recent times, Redmi has adopted some very premium and stylish design aesthetics, and the Redmi 8 continues that trend, with great design and build quality
- The ruby-red color variant especially looks stunning, and it is astonishing to see how far budget hardware has come
- The phone also feels premium to the touch
- The front is sharp and modern, with a dewdrop notch, and very similar to the Redmi 8A
- The location of the fingerprint scanner at the back is near perfect - and the scanner is very quick as well
- Decent 6.2-inch IPS display, the same as the one on the Redmi 8A - gets bright enough for outdoor use
- Packs Gorilla glass 5 protection, which is a big bonus in this price segment
- MIUI is one of the more refined and smooth Android skins around, and has a lot of customization/theming options - there’s ample features for power users - from gestures to the ability to switch around button layouts as well as a robust home screen customisation experience, you can really make the phone your own
- Decent day-to-day performance, with the same Snapdragon 439 as the Redmi 8A (it's not really meant for gaming though)
- Ok camera setup, at this price point
- Outdoor shots look good enough with Xiaomi’s AI enhancements kicking in to deliver punchy images
- The dedicated secondary camera enables portrait mode, and edge detection is decent
- USB-C at an entry-level price deserves kudos
- Phenomenal battery life with a 5000mAh cell paired with entry-level hardware - you will comfortably get 2 days of use
- 18W fast-charging support (though a standard 10W brick is included in the box)
- Overall, the Redmi 8 is another very good budget option from Xiaomi's camp, and along with the Realme C2/3i, will likely dominate the entry-level smartphone segment in India
|
- Catchy, elegant 'Sunrise' rear design, similar to the Realme 5i - the back panel produces a sun-ray like pattern when light hits it which looks stunning
- Trendy, tear-drop notch front design - the bezels on the sides are impressively thin for smartphones at this price
- The matte finished back with lines and patterns almost completely eliminates the chances of getting fingerprints or smudges - it also adds a lot of grip and gives the phone a very solid, sturdy feel
- The 20:9 aspect ratio makes the smartphone tall and slim, so it's relatively comfortable to hold and use
- Face recognition is quick to unlock the smartphone in different lighting conditions
- Large, 6.5 inch IPS display with HD+ resolution - the colors are vibrant with a decent amount of sharpness
- Sunlight legibility is also good - the display gets bright enough for comfortable outdoor use
- The Realme C3 comes with Realme UI based on Android 10 which is much more streamlined and clean compared to previous realme phones - it still packs a lot of useful features like Dark mode, Focus mode, Game Space and Personal Information Protection
- Excellent performance for the price - the MediaTek Helio G70 throws the competition out of the park and scores even higher at benchmarks than the much pricier Galaxy A51 and the Oppo F15 - there's no noticeable lag in regular use and PUBG Mobile on the Realme C3 defaulted to High presets and ran fairly smooth
- Decent dual camera setup for the price - a 12MP primary shooter + a 2MP depth sensor
- In daylight, the Realme C3 is quick to lock focus and does a fair job of metering light, photos look good and the quality is better than what some of the other smartphones at this price point can produce
- There's also a decent Macro mode which lets you get very close to the subject (focusing at close distance could be an issue though)
- Decent portrait mode, with good edge detection (though, the quality could have been better)
- Decent video recording quality, with a option to shoot slow motion videos
- Impressive battery life with a big 5000 mAh battery - it lasts for two full days on a single charge with moderate usage
- The Realme C3 is an easy smartphone to recommend and a solid update to the Realme C2 - it packs a powerful SoC, battery life is excellent, offers a large screen for media consumption and camera performance is acceptable for the price

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- Of course the glossy hardware catches on fingerprints (Xiaomi has thankfully tossed in a TPU case in the box, though)
- Xiaomi has added a Redmi logo on the lower bezel and that feels like a bit of an overkill given there is Redmi already engraved on the back
- It still continues to pack a lot of bloat though - you get 20-something pre-installed applications with wide-ranging requirements for user permissions
- Limited dynamic range - the camera has a tendency to blow out highlights
- Despite support for dual-pixel autofocus, the camera often hunts to get a focus lock
- Images have some softness to them in anything less than perfect light - indoor images tend to be short on details
- Videos are again fine in daylight, but not so much in anything less than that
- Overall, the camera is not a particularly strong area for the Redmi 8
|
- A bit heavy, at 195g
- There is no Widevine L1 certification which means that you cannot enjoy HD content on Netflix and Amazon Prime
- There's still some bloatware that comes pre-installed
- Low light photos are average, as expected, they lack detail and aren't very sharp
- Selfies are average too with inaccurate colour tone and low sharpness and details
- Still offers the old MicroUSB, while the competition has started offering USB Type-C in the budget segment
- Charging is on the slower side with the 10W charger - it takes over 3 hours to charge the smartphone completely
