2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 9 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Features a well-built, well-designed metal black+plastic frame aesthetic, paired with a massive display with a not-so-massive notch
  • At 6.26 inches diagonally with relatively narrow borders all around, the screen does have a strong visual impact
  • Unlike a lot of glossy phones in this segment now, the phone is also not a fingerprint magnet
  • Very light, especially given the large battery it packs
  • If you aren't a fan of big phones in general, you probably won't warm up to the ZenFone Max M2 though - it's only just about usable with one hand, and it's also not the easiest phone to fit into a trouser pocket

Display

  • Decent, large, bright display

Software

  • Asus remains committed to stock Android for its low-end phones, and that's a good thing - it's nice and simple to use, and there is little to no bloat
  • One of the software issues currently though is the un-optimised notch - the network bars and call profile icons usually aren’t visible fully, and a portion of those are hidden under the notch itself - hopefully this is something an OTA update will fix soon

Performance

  • Performance is a key USP here, with Asus managing to offer a relatively powerful processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632, at a new low price - the phone is consistently smooth throughout, and even games like PUBG Mobile runs smoothly

Camera

  • Decent dual rear cameras - daytime shots especially are well detailed
  • Decent front camera too, and users will generally be happy with the quality of selfies they can take for social media - Asus is also planning future updates to bring EIS and the Depth Effect mode to the front camera
  • Shots taken from the rear cameras using the Depth Effect mode are average though
  • Average low-light camera performance for both front and rear cameras
  • The camera app is also sometimes slowish - that apart, the UI is also not the best - for example, it takes three taps to begin recording a video
  • Overall, the camera performance is a notch below what the Redmi 6 Pro (the primary competitor here) manages to deliver

Audio

  • Impressive speaker - it is not only loud but also produces quite rich, deep sound

Battery

  • Very good battery life with a generous 4000mAh battery - you can get up to 2 days of use with moderate use
  • There is no official fast charging support, but the included 10W charger has a decent charging speed

Verdict

  • Overall, the Max M2 is another winner from the Asus camp this year - and will be a strong choice in this segment - it wins on 4 important counts - a large 'notch' display, stock Android experience, great processor for the price, and a good battery life - providing for a reliable all-round experience
  • One of the biggest threats to the Max M2 might be its one generation old, but still excellent, bigger brother -- the Zenfone Max Pro M1 - at almost a similar price, the Max Pro M1 offers the more potent Snapdragon 636 chipset, a full HD+ display and a bigger 5000mAh battery - though it doesn't have a notch display - so which one you choose among these might be down to more individual preferences
  • And if you want a better camera in this price range, then you will probably want to look at the Redmi Note 6 Pro, or Nokia 5.1 Plus
