2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 32+ Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Excellent build, textured back plate
  • Light and sleek
  • Over 50 fully-customizable keyboard and convenience key shortcuts

Display

  • One of the usability constrains such a device puts on you is that having to constantly switch between the keyboard and display for input is a pain - this is hindered further by the Key2 being a fairly sizeable phone – more comparable to the OnePlus 6 or Note 8 than an iPhone or ‘classic’ BlackBerry – so moving your finger between the keyboard and something at the top of the display requires a stretch

Software

  • The Key2, like the KeyOne before it, features gesture control built into the keyboard - this lets you scroll up and down and side-to-side without reaching up to the display - it’s a nice touch and one that becomes seriously useful once you become familiar with the phone
  • Like the KeyOne, the Key2 uses Android OS, and therefore taps into the extensive Android app ecosystem
  • Comes bundled with an extensive BlackBerry suite of apps, as well as useful security & privacy features

Performance

  • Excellent, tactile hardware keyboard - improved even over the already good keyboard on the the KeyOne
  • Regular performance is good, but it lacks the raw power to convince hardcore gamers and power users - it fails to be responsive even for gaming titles that aren't graphically intensive

Camera

  • Average dual camera setup on the rear - especially low light images/videos turn out very muddy

Battery

  • Ridiculously long-lasting battery life - will comfortably last a couple of days
  • Really fast recharge time - goes from 0 to 100% in 90 minutes

More

  • The small screen is frustrating to use - using a square-ish 3:2 screen in 2018 is not fun despite its sharp resolution and decent contrast - it won’t adapt well to fullscreen apps and is stingy on viewable content - it’s far too cramped to use effectively on most Instagram feeds, too limiting to really play games, and awkward to watch YouTube videos with the keyboard oriented in landscape
  • On the whole, the Key2 is a step-up from its predecessor but it still very much a niche phone for physical keyboard die-hards - you won't want this if you're thinking of upgrading from a regular Android phone and your muscle memory is trained for on-screen keyboards - having said that, if you are sure that you do want a physical keyboard, the Key2 is by far the best Android phone to have one
