2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 7 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Excellent build quality
  • Metal unibody design, with water resistance
  • A bit uncomfortable to hold because of the large size and flat back design - in size it’s no bigger than a Google Pixel XL, but the sharp chamfers on the sides are so steep that it becomes tough to handle and slightly uncomfortable to hold
  • Fingerprint reader is accurate but can be a bit sluggish at times

  • Good LCD screen panel - accurate and detailed, with viewing angles that are better than the HTC 10

  • HTC's Sense UI is easily one of the best Android skins around, that keeps things nice and simple, and ditches nearly all the useless, duplicate apps that have become so common on Android phones - keeps things nice and minimal and aids an Android experience that is smooth and cohesive
  • Add-ons like the Blinkfeed, the fancy little news and social feed aggregator and the Boost+ app that lets you lock apps and have them only be opened by your fingerprint are very useful too

  • Performance is fine, but not quite what one would expect for the price, suffering from the old Snapdragon 810 CPU - app crashes too are fairly frequent - benchmark scores are similar to the much older Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the OnePlus 2
  • There is no support for Daydream VR as it isn’t compatible with the 810 CPU

  • Very good selfie camera
  • Unreliable rear camera - the camera can sometimes be good, but most of the time the pictures are either out of focus or lack detail - given what one would expect at this price point - photos are more comparable to something like the Moto G rather than the LG G5

  • Very good audio quality via both headphones and the speaker
  • Very good call quality with noise-cancelling microphones
  • No standard headphone jack or dongle - the included USB-C headphones are good but they’re the in-ear variety and as such probably won’t be for everyone

  • Decent battery life - makes it through the day with normal use
  • Even the LTE modem and Quick Charging tech are a couple of generations behind current high-end phones
  • Gets noticeably warm during charging and even more so when playing demanding games
  • Doesn’t support any fast charging standard over Quick Charge 2.0 - so a full juice-up takes about 2 hours, which is decent but not great
