2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 6 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Sleek looks, polished design - the HTC Desire 12 Plus strikes a premium look, and mimics the polished Liquid Surface look from HTC’s U11 flagship (but is made of durable acrylic instead of glass)
  • Sits snugly in your hand - the rear edges curve smoothly into the flat back panel, giving the phone a great and comfy in-hand feel - the minimal bezel design helps too in keeping the phone relatively compact
  • The fingerprint sensor on the back is well-placed, works without a hitch, and unlocks the phone quickly, even with partial finger placements
  • The back tends to be a fingerprint magnet, so you might want to use a case
  • Somewhat mushy power and volume rocker buttons

  • Crisp, clear, large display - images on the Desire 12+ are sharp and have an impressive level of clarity despite the modest resolution - it also does a fine job of producing natural looking colors - the modern 18:9 aspect ratio is great for viewing content whether it’s websites, e-books, games, apps and videos - there’s also a Night Light mode that reduces blue light on the screen to protect your eyes and help you fall asleep easier
  • The display is pretty good but could have been brighter under sunlight

  • HTC retains a Clutter-free Android UI with minimal bloat - the only significant additions are HTC’s Blink Feed (social media+news feed) and Sense Companion (AI companion, similar to Google Assistant - it gives you suggestions throughout the day on how to make the most out of your phone)

  • Decent performance for day-to-day use, backed by the Snapdragon 450 - navigation is fast, clean and smooth on the Desire 12 Plus with no noticeable lag (benchmark scores are similar to the likes of Honor 7x, Honor 9 Lite, Nokia 6, and Moto G5S)
  • The performance while decent in daily use, is a full step behind the best phones in this price bracket, almost all of which use faster chipsets

  • Pretty capable set of dual camera on the rear - the rear cameras can turn out some very good shots - though getting there takes some effort, because of the slowness of the app - but if you’re in a well-lit environment and have steady enough hands AND your subject doesn’t move too much, you can snap some beautiful shots - color reproduction on photos is good too
  • The dual setup allows for multiple focal point capture at the same time, allowing you to adjust focus in photos later so if you aren’t happy with your shots, a quick tweak in the Photos app can put things right - you can take some pretty good bokeh shots as well with reasonably blurred backgrounds for portraits and such
  • Decent selfie camera too - selfies on the HTC Desire 12 Plus turn out reasonably well with accurate tones (but there’s a noticeable loss in detail, and shutter speeds are even slower than the cameras on the rear, so taking a selfie while walking is out of the question)
  • Overall, the cameras on HTC Desire 12 Plus are more than capable albeit on the slow side and can deliver results rivalling its mid-range competitors
  • The cameras (both those on the rear, and the front camera), while pretty good, are definitely on the slow side - the camera app is plagued with lag, and shutter speeds are slow even during daylight conditions
  • Low-light scenarios are a real struggle for the same reason - the camera will take its time to focus, and shutter speeds are even worse

  • The audio quality via single downward-firing mono speaker on the bottom is loud and clear for the most part and avoids sounding too reedy

  • Decent battery life - it is able to comfortably last a day after moderate use with 20% left in the tank towards the end of the day
  • Decent charging speed (though it doesn't support fast charging) - you can charge the phone to 70% in an hour and a half

  • Storage-wise, if you tend to save a lot of videos/games on your phone, the humble 32GB can get limiting - and if you add to that with microSD storage, you will lose out on the second sim slot (the phone has Hybrid Dual SIM), so that is something to keep in mind
  • On the whole, while the Desire 12 Plus is a decent pick for those not too fussed about the latest and greatest, and simply want a decent performer, but it will face some very tough competition in this segment from Xiaomi, Honor, Nokia and other phones, that offer higher resolution screens, pixel-packed cameras and faster chipsets in an even lower price range
