2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 5 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Premium glass-metal design, with a unique pearlescent finish, that makes the phone stand out
  • Comfortable to hold and use
  • Great fingerprint scanner just below the screen

  • Decent 5.2in display - with good brightness and contrast levels - and a size that should be a good size for just about anyone - not so big, but not small enough you’d never want to watch videos on the thing

  • HTC Sense UI on top of Android is one of the better Android UIs, and includes HTC's signature BlinkFeed with news stories or updates from your social networks

  • Also tends to heat up when playing graphic intensive games

  • Very good front camera with a wider lens
  • The otherwise decent camera is spoiled a bit by the shutter lag (especially when HDR mode is on)

  • Decent, good-volume speaker (though not of the quality of HTC’s BoomSound phones)
  • Does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack - and instead comes with a pair of USB C earphones, which sound good, but are not exceptional - and will be hard to replace because the market hardly has any USB-C headphone yet

  • Average battery life - only lasts a full day when you strip back on basically all its connected features, like web browsing or music streaming - with medium to heavy use, it will burn through two full charges in a single day
  • There's no support for ultra-fast charging either, which is present in a lot of the competing phones

  • Decent image quality with the rear camera - focusing is pretty reliable and as there’s optical image stabilisation too - you don’t need hands with the stability of granite to take non-blurry low-light pics - however, on the whole, the U Play still clearly has a mid-range camera, not a flagship one
  • While the phone is fast, and smooth in regular use, it does fall behind the competition in this price bracket - the difference will start to show up in heavy games
