2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 7 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Clean, simple, no-fuss design
  • Easy to use and live with - one-handed use wasn't much of a problem - the slightly rounded sides make this phone comfortable to hold - at 142g, it won't weigh down your pockets either
  • No fingerprint sensor
  • Slow, unreliable Face unlock - unlocking the phone with your faces takes a good 2-3 seconds each time

  • Nice, modern, 18:9 screen on the front - it's good for watching videos on, thanks to its vibrant colour reproduction - and it is bright enough to be usable outdoors without trouble

  • Huawei's custom EMUI skin is a decent Android skin overall, and has plenty of customization options including a switchable app drawer and your choice of icon density
  • The software implementation to deal with native 16:9 apps on the 18:9 screen is less than ideal - usually most phones just leave black bands on this space - with this phone though, Honor for some reason decided it would be a good idea to always show a message in the blank space, directing you to go to the Settings to force an app to fill the screen - most people will find this invasive and distracting, especially when gaming - there might be apps that cannot scale gracefully, and they should usually be allowed to run letterboxed in peace
  • There's some bloatware that comes packed with EMUI - including a Themes app, a Phone Manager with the usual RAM cleanup and permissions management tools, and a formulaic freemium game, and it's own own gallery, calendar, email, music, and video apps

  • Laggy performance - you will encounter odd momentary freezes and lags throughout the interface - loading times of apps is pretty significant - switching between apps isn't very smooth - and gaming except the most simple games is a frustrating experience - overall benchmark scores are also just about passable for this price bracket

  • Honor's camera app takes a little getting used to - it's not the most intuitive, and you have to dig through it sometimes to get to what you want
  • Quality wise too, both the rear and front cameras are ordinary - you will see grain and artificial-looking textures even in close-up shots - pictures are sometimes unfocused or have overexposed patches - photos look ok on the phone's own screen, but you can't really do much with them beyond that - night photography is pretty average too
  • Video recording quality is not bad but the clips are saved in the ancient 3GP format

  • The speaker is just about okay for watching videos and playing games - though don't expect music to sound great

  • Pretty good battery life - you will be able to get through a full day of use with around 40 percent battery left, with moderate use

  • The 16GB of storage will get limiting soon, if you install any big apps/games on the phone - which will require you to then extend the internal memory by using an external card - and that will then degrade performance further
  • On the whole, while the Honor 7S does look good, the actual usage is frustrating on multiple levels - even some of last year's phones at this price level deliver better features and performance - it will find is tough to compete against the likes of Redmi 6A or Redmi 6, which offer better performance, and much better value for money
