2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 2 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Good built quality - feels sturdy and capable of surviving multiple drops
  • They key new design element with the Jio Phone 2 is of course the QWERTY keypad with a 4-way navigation key and a horizontal display - just because of this one thing, it feels a notch above than the current feature phones (QWERTY feature phones are a rare commodity these days)
  • Even though the keys are really small (and somewhat hard), they are well spread out and tactile - and you can get used to them reasonably quickly
  • Inside the circular navigation key, there sits the Google Assistant launcher which can be accessed by a single tap - you can long-press the round microphone button to ask queries and get answers, perform tasks such as turning on Bluetooth or sending texts - this is the other big highlight of the JioPhone 2, and will make it easier for a lot of people to find their way around the device
  • Despite the QWERTY keypad, the phone fits into one's hands and while a QWERTY keypad is supposed to be worked with both of your hands, every single key of the Jio Phone 2 is accessible with a single hand, which is something very user friendly
  • The matte finish on the back makes the device easy to grip and not slip away from the hand, especially while typing
  • Though compact in terms of height & width, the device is pretty thick and chunky

  • Decent 2.4-inch (240x320 pixels) QVGA display - as much as you can expect from a feature phone - and it offers better viewing angles than the Jio Phone - it is also sufficiently bright for outdoor usage and due to its dimensions, browsing through Facebook and Google also seem practical - it isn’t the best screen you would find on the market on a feature phone, but it's still decent
  • The horizontal screen is also a better option to watch videos and browse online, than the usual vertical screens

  • Just like the original JioPhone, this smart feature phone is powered by KaiOS (just an updated v2.5 build) and it renders you access to a lot of features you’d only expect to see in a smartphone, such as a notification center, location services, privacy options, and other useful settings
  • In order words, it is mostly a feature phone with some added features which make it comparable to an entry-level smartphone - it lets you browse, watch videos, make 4G calls, video calls and access apps such as Facebook, YouTube, Google Maps, and WhatsApp
  • You also have access to the Jio suite of apps which includes JioTV, Jio Pay, JioChat, MyJio App, Jio Store and more.
  • While Jio Pay is Jio’s own digital wallet, JioTV offers live TV channels. When it comes to usability, there is the Jio Cinema app for streaming movies, Jio Music for audio streaming and for a curated news feed, there is the Jio Xpress News app
  • There’s also a Jio AppStore available on the device, so you can choose to install apps such as Google Maps, Hotstar, BookMyShow, and others
  • One of the biggest ‘smart’ features of the Jio Phone 2 is the fact that it packs a USB cable which comes with the charger, you can also play all streams from the Jio Phone 2 on your TV
  • Just like the original JioPhone, this device also comes with NFC and JioPay, which makes it possible for you to pay for goods at the supermarket using just your phone
  • Make no mistake though, the Jio Phone 2 is indeed a feature phone that tries to bridge the gap between a smartphone and a feature phone with 4G connectivity, support for popular apps, a QWERTY keypad and dual SIM support - but the experience is not comparable to what you can do with an Android smartphone

  • Performance is ok generally, on par with other feature phones, but the phone does feels slow sometimes due to sluggish animations, as well as unnecessary splash screens that show up on opening each app

  • Coming to the optics, the JioPhone 2 features a 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera, which the device has carried forward from its predecessor - the photos clicked using this setup are just about okay-ish for what you’re getting in the package - you won’t be able to discern any details and the photos are full of noise in most situations, especially in low light, but you can transfer them to your smartphone or PC to share on social media

  • Good audio quality, both while talking over the call or listening to music

  • Decent (though not exceptional) battery life - you will generally get a bit more than a day of battery life, and up to 2 days with lighter use (some other less accomplished feature phones do quite a bit better with battery life)

  • Coming to the dual-SIM connectivity, the secondary SIM slot supports a cellular connection from any other operator apart from Jio (though it is limited to 2G availability)
  • There also some very good bundled Jio offers with the phone, so if you have bought in on the Jio network (and you have good coverage in your area), then that's an added value proposition
  • Overall, the JioPhone 2 is a significant upgrade over the JioPhone, with its QWERTY keypad and deep Google Assistant integration
  • For the young crowd, it may not replace your current smartphone but this can be a good secondary device with some features that can get things done when needed
  • For people purchasing their first phone, the less technically inclined, those that dislike touchscreens, and the elderly - JioPhone 2 lets you do all the basic stuff - navigation, chatting, Facebook, Youtube, Google searches - it's a great “smart” feature phone, a segment that it basically owns
