2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 14+ Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Nice, simple, glossy, plastic design, and good build quality
  • The G7 Power's fingerprint sensor has migrated to the back of the phone, nestled in the "Batwing" Motorola dimple - it's pretty well placed
  • There's also fairly fast face unlock
  • Splash resistant body
  • On the heavy side, at 198g - thanks in large part to the large battery it packs
  • The glossy back panel is super-prone to smudges and fingerprints, and also quite slippery - using a case is pretty much a must with this phone (luckily there is a case included in the retail package)

Display

  • Large 6.2-inch, standard notch display - it has nice colors and good viewing angles
  • Moto Display (always-on display) is still there, and continues to be one of the defining features of the Moto G series
  • Screen resolution is on the low side though - the emphasis here is to maximise the battery life, and not necessarily give the best display

Software

  • Simple, uncluttered stock Android UI, with some very useful Moto customizations - Moto phones continue to offer one of the best software experiences on Android
  • Software updates from Motorola in recent times have been far less frequent compared to before, so if you are look for both a stock Android phone + more updates in the future, 'Android One' devices would be better options

Performance

  • While the Snapdragon 632 will give you perfectly decent day-to-day performance, it is still a bit underpowered compared to a lot of the competition - the GPU especially is relatively weak, so this is not a great phone for games (especially heavy duty ones like PUBG)

Camera

  • Pretty good camera quality for the price bracket
  • The single rear camera setup does well with outdoor and moderately-lit indoor shots - there is plenty of detail, low noise levels, nice sharpness, and lively and accurate colors - the dynamic range isn't spectacular, but it's quite decent
  • There's also a software portrait mode (though it's not too great)
  • Good selfie camera too - you can get some decent shots especially in well lit scenes - there is lots of resolved detail, good sharpness, high contrast, and true to life colors
  • Selfie portraits are actually better than the rear camera portraits at subject separation and convincing out-of-focus area rendition
  • Good video recording performance too - with support for 4k video recording, and an effective EIS algorithm
  • You can still do the effortless double-twist-to-open-camera gesture from any app
  • Overall, the cameras are pretty good on the G7 Power, comparable to other good camera phones in this price range, and only a shade behind it's senior cousin, the Moto G7
  • Low light performance could have been better though

Audio

  • The earpiece on the Moto G7 Power also doubles as a loudspeaker - its audio is rich, loud, and deep enough (but because the speaker is not very powerful, its output is quite directional meaning it feels this loud only when it's pointed at you)

Battery

  • Excellent battery life through a combination of a huge 5000mAh battery and a low resolution screen - you will get 2+ days of use on average
  • Supports fast charging via the USB-C port

Verdict

  • The Moto G7 Power is another good "user-experience" phone from Motorola's ranks - and is a good choice for users who are looking for a simple, casual use phone with an outstanding battery life
