2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 29+ Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Top notch build quality and premium, elegant glass-back design - the front and back are made out of glass, whereas the frame is a "high-tech polymer that's twice as strong as polycarbonate and half the weight of aluminum" - it's technically plastic, but it has a sturdy feel to it that does make it feel like aluminum in the hand
  • The back glass has a nice matte finish - it's soft to the touch and stands out a bit from traditional glass back designs
  • The green colorway variant is especially attractive and stylish (the black one is more sober)
  • The front is modern and sharp too - with a teardrop notch
  • The power button has a built-in LED light that pulses when you receive a notification, and it's equal parts subtle and cool
  • Dedicated Google Assistant button
  • Very good rear fingerprint sensor
  • Overall, the phone feels like it was built with love and care, with a sturdy frame, clicky buttons, and a nice bit of heft giving it the essence of a much more expensive phone

Display

  • Very good, crisp, colorful, 6.3-inch IPS display
  • Nokia's HDR PureDisplay technology, in addition to supporting native HDR content, also allows the Nokia 7.2 to natively convert SDR videos into HDR ones — resulting in a picture that's brighter and more colorful - it gives everything you watch a noticeable pop, making movies, TV shows, and YouTube clips that much more enjoyable
  • You can also enable the Nokia 7.2's "Dynamic Mode" to have it automatically adjust your screen's color, contrast, brightness, and white balance based on what you're doing - for example, if you're reading a book in the Kindle app, your screen will become warmer as to be easier on your eyes

Software

  • Being part of Android One series, you get clean, simple stock Android backed by guaranteed updates

Performance

  • Decent performance for this price bracket with a solid Snapdragon 660 powering the phone - day-to-day tasks, and games are usually smooth
  • It's not all perfect though - the Nokia 7.2 can sometimes be more sluggish than expected - navigating through the UI is sometimes met with slightly choppy animations, scrolling through social feeds/webpages doesn't always feel buttery smooth, and the camera app can sometimes take a long time to actually capture an image after pressing the shutter button

Camera

  • Decent triple camera setup for the price bracket - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor that's used for portrait shots
  • The 48MP camera captures a lot of detail and generally showcases vibrant colors
  • Portrait mode is pretty good too - the detail and color of the primary camera shine through, and Nokia allows you to change the effect and intensity after the fact
  • Overall, this is a decent camera phone for this price category (though it's not up to the level of the category leaders from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme)
  • Images from the 48MP camera can sometimes be overly sharpened
  • Low light photography is average
  • The 118-degree ultra-wide camera is a lot of fun to use and opens up new possibilities with the types of photos you can take, but similar to a lot of other phones with an ultra-wide lens, there's a very noticeable decrease in image quality compared to the primary camera

Audio

  • The single speaker gets loud enough and sounds fine

Battery

  • Good battery life with a 3500 mAh battery - you will comfortably get a day of use, even with heavy usage
  • No fast charging support

Verdict

  • Overall, while the Nokia 7.2 is a pretty decent phone on its own, it faces some pretty tough competition in its price category at the moment from Xiaomi and Realme, which it will find tough to beat, primarily on account of its average performance and cameras - if, however it's the software experience that matters most to you, it's still worth looking at
