2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 9 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Edgy 'gaming phone' design - with RBG lights and air vents - the Nubia Red Magic’s outer design will please a mobile gamer
  • Build quality is good too - the buttons feels strong and so is the frame and the rest of the body
  • Quite heavy - because of the combination of the big 3800mAh battery and the sturdy metal body

  • Ordinary display for a 'gaming' phone - while other gaming phones like the Asus ROG phone and the Razer Phone attempt to gain supremacy with a display with higher-than-normal refresh rates, the Red Magic sticks to the usual 1080p tall panel - and has slightly washed out colours
  • Sunlight legibility is average too
  • Has Widevine L3 certification which means you won’t be able to stream content from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in FullHD or even in HD
  • Further, the YouTube app itself isn’t optimised to fill up the extra screen real estate
  • There’s also no HDR support or support for a wider colour gamut which are something gamers look forward to, in a phone
  • These and other little things go a long way in making the user experience better and it’s disappointing to see these features not present in a ‘gaming phone’

  • Runs on pure, simple stock Android
  • The GameBoost mode (triggered via a dedicated switch on the side of the phone) cuts off incoming call and message notifications and lights up the LED strip on the back in a few lovely colours
  • Even though the UI is stock, there is some adware in the form of a preloaded custom keyboard app, that actually displays ads right on the keyboard

  • Performance is again disappointing for a gaming centric phone with a generation old hardware (Snapdragon 835)
  • Of course, the 835 will give you butter smooth performance in daily use - but high-end games like PUBG will not be as smooth as on Snapdragon 845 phones - phones like the Poco F1 and the Asus Zenfone 5z handle gaming much better, around this price bracket

  • Decent selfie camera, with a smoothening effect on the skin
  • Mediocre rear camera - the phone relies on a single 24MP sensor with f/1.7 aperture - but has no AI or additional sensors to enable portrait mode, etc - even the Pro Mode in the camera app is heavily restricted
  • There is visible noise even in daylight photos
  • In close-up photos, detail levels are low
  • In low-light, the performance is expectedly bad

  • Long battery life - with a 3800mAh battery - will comfortably last the day even with heavy use
  • The phone charges to full capacity in around an hour and a half, thanks to a 12V fast charger

  • Although the Red Magic claims to be the most affordable 'gaming smartphone' around right now - but just in terms of pure performance, if you are planning to spend this much money, there are much better performing, and all-round great phones around - the only thing is that they won't look like 'dedicated gaming phones'
