2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 5 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Dated design - when these days, even budget mobile phones come with funky 18:9 displays and slim profiles - the front of the J2 Core is home to a 5-inch display, surrounded by wide bezels on all four sides
  • No fingerprint sensor

Display

  • The display on the phone has a resolution of 540×960 pixels, which is notably less than the HD or HD+ resolution screens you get on some competing devices - a 720p panel would’ve definitely made things better
  • Brightness levels (minimum and maximum) are okay, but you must adjust them manually every time according to your surroundings, given that the Galaxy J2 Core does not have an ambient light sensor to automatically set brightness

Software

  • Android Go apps (Gmail Go, Google Maps Go) tend to be lighter, and use less data - so thats a plus point for the target audience of this device (first time smartphone users)
  • Given the limited specs of the phone, Samsung's Experience UX overlay tends to be a burden on the Android Go OS at the core, and causes lags here and there - it doesn’t help also that this customization isn’t simply cosmetic - the Galaxy J2 Core has many duplicate apps such as the web browser, which can’t be uninstalled - apart from that, the usual bloat (for example, Samsung Members and Galaxy Apps) is there as well, and you can’t get rid of it either - naturally, it also occupies space on the internal storage, which is already on the lower side at 8GB - overall it might have been much better for Samsung to have just provided a stock Android Go experience on this phone

Performance

  • Keeping the limited specs in mind, and if you leave aside the occasional lags in the UI due to the Samsung Experience UX, the phone does ok with day to day use, and with simple games - but again it has to be kept in mind that this smartphone is targeted at first-time users, transitioning from feature phones so it's more meant for basic functions such as instant messaging on WhatsApp or social media

Camera

  • For a smartphone at this price, the Galaxy J2 Core’s cameras (both rear and front) are ok, especially in daylight, and can take usable pictures

Audio

  • Good call quality
  • Low loudspeaker output

Battery

  • Good battery life - even with heavy use, the smartphone’s 2600mAh powerpack easily lasts more than an entire day - the low-resolution display and the efficient 14nm chipset of course help
  • Removable battery (a rarity these days, but one that still appeals to a lot of users)

More

  • 8GB of internal storage will get limiting very soon, requiring you to move apps to the SD card - which will further impact performance
  • On the whole, the J2 Core ultimately suffers from the same problem that Samsung’s other lower-end smartphones have - too many missing basic features and under-powered hardware, even with the low price in mind - the fact that its software experience is average doesn’t help things either, since the typical advantages of Android Go are squandered away by Samsung’s modifications to some extent - you would be better off considering something like the Xiaomi Redmi 6A instead, which offers a full-fledged Android experience with more RAM and storage as well
