2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 8 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

  • Decent build quality
  • Modern design with a tall 'full view' display
  • Rounded sides and edges that make it easy to hold
  • The fingerprint scanner at the back is easy to reach and quick to unlock
  • The volume buttons are placed a little too high
  • The back picks up fingerprints quite easily

  • The tall display makes content immersive and has decent viewing angles (outdoor visibility could have been better though)

  • While HiOS UI is ok, it does come with plenty of bloatware like the Phoenix Browser, which is very spammy as it causes ads to pop up on the lockscreen quite often (the app cannot be uninstalled, but you can disable it)

  • Average performance - the phone is ok for basic use, but struggles with heavier apps - it's only really meant for simple users

  • Average rear and front cameras - although the Camon series is branded as a camera-centric line, the cameras on the Camon i are pretty average, and tend to especially struggle with sub-optimal light - HDR mode is also a little slow and any movement while shooting results in ghosting - video recording is average too, with no stabilisation

  • Decent battery life - will last you the day with moderate use

  • HiOS UI over Android is decent on the whole, supports gestures, and has interesting innovations like a WhatsApp Mode toggle which lets only WhatsApp notifications through, while disabling background data for all other apps - this might be useful if you want to be frugal with your data usage but still receive WhatsApp messages
  • One the whole, the Camon i will find it pretty difficult to compete in this packed, competitive price segment - other phones like the Smartron t.phone P, the InFocus Vision 3, the Moto G5, 10.or, and of course the Redmi 5, will offer significantly better options
