2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 3 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Eye-catching, attractive design, like a lot of recent Vivo and Oppo phones - the back of the phone is all sorts of interesting, with gradient style colorways - it’s definitely going to turn heads
  • On the front, the phone is all screen - and looks gorgeous - it's an expansive viewing field that is as close to the concept of all-screen devices as we’ve gotten to so far
  • Solid build quality
  • This is not a small phone, and is even slightly bigger than the V15 Pro, but the gently curved edges and back help in making it relatively comfortable to hold - Vivo has also done a really good job with weight distribution, and the phone nestles very easily in the palm of your hand
  • There’s a direct shortcut for Google Assistant on the left side of the phone - double clicking the button activates Google Lens or Vivo’s own Jovi image recognition
  • The positioning of the fingerprint sensor at the back is convenient, and it's impressively quick to unlock
  • The volume rocker is a little bit too high up, sometimes requiring a little shimmy to reach
  • Coming as the the Vivo V15 Pro does with a glossy back, the usual caveats apply - the phone is slippery, and is nearly impossible to keep the back clean of fingerprints and smudges (having said that, Vivo is throwing a well-designed case in the box, which takes care of these issues)
  • One noticeable omission is the lack of face unlock - even though both the Vivo V15 and the Vivo V15 Pro feature 32-megapixel selfie cameras housed in motorised pop-up modules, but the latter supports face recognition, while the former inexplicably misses out on it

Display

  • The large, uninterrupted 6.53 inch Full HD+ display stands out - the colour output is good and text looks crisp on it - viewing angles are also decent with minimal colour shift when seen from different angles - it's also excellent for media consumption, with no notch to disrupt a clean experience
  • The lack of a Super AMOLED panel though is a bit disappointing, especially considering that the Samsung Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 both have Super AMOLED panels despite being priced significantly lower
  • The Vivo V15's display also could have been better in terms of sunlight legibility
  • The lack of Widewine L1 certification means that the phone can’t stream HD videos on Netflix or Amazon (they will stream at 540p resolution)

Software

  • On it's own, FunTouch OS UI is pretty functional, customizable, and smooth
  • It is still pretty much a clone of iOS though - and that might not be everyone's cup of tea
  • It also packs a bunch of bloatware (mostly un-installable, thankfully)
  • It's also somewhat buggy at places - for instance the aggressive battery management means that it sometimes force closes apps unexpectedly

Performance

  • Solid performance backed by the octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 SoC (similar to Snapdragon 660) - day-to-day performance is, as expected, butter smooth - and complex games run well too in medium graphics settings - and the 6GB of RAM certainly helps while running multiple apps in the background
  • Having said that, there are a number of better performing phones in this and lower price brackets (including the Poco F1 with a flagship Snapdragon 845 powering it), so the V15 is not winning any performance wars

Camera

  • Decent set of triple rear cameras - consisting of a main 12-megapixel camera, an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor
  • Image quality in daylight is very competent - images generally turn out to be quite detailed, exhibiting punchy colours and commendable surface details
  • The Vivo V15 also shines when it comes to macro shots - subjects with rich colour profiles were captured with great detail - shades turn out to be vibrant, gradients are decent, and surface traits such as ridges are also distinguishable when zoomed in
  • Portrait shots turn out well too, with good depth, and the ability to adjust the strength of the blur effect both before and after taking a photo
  • The dedicated wide-angle camera lets you capture wide panoramas, producing interesting frames
  • Very good popup selfie 32MP camera, the same one as the Vivo V15 Pro - it pops out in under half a second - and selfies have an impressive amount of detail, with good colour reproduction and sharpness - edge detection is also fairly accurate, and the studio lighting effects help make shots social-media-ready by letting you add filters and colourful effects - overall, as far as selfie cameras go, this is one of the best, not just in this price range, but on any smartphone
  • Average video recording quality - the Vivo V15 can't shoot 4K or full-HD 60fps video, and lacks stabilization - the sound recording quality is average as well
  • The night performance of the rear camera setup is pretty average too - night shots exhibit grainy textures and have a considerable amount of noise - in comparison, the significantly cheaper Redmi Note 7 Pro does a much better job at retaining details and bringing out colours

Connectivity

  • Uses the old microUSB standard, instead of the modern USB-C

Battery

  • Very good battery life with a 4000mAh battery - with moderate use the phone can easily give you up to 1.5 days
  • The battery life is even slightly better than it's elder sibling, the V15 Pro
  • Supports fast charging with Vivo’s “Dual Engine” charging - you get a 40 percent charge in 30 minutes - and a full charge in about 1 hour 40 minutes

Verdict

  • Overall, the V15 is another good, innovative device from the Vivo camp - you can go for it if you want a good balance between performance and design, and an amazing, true 'full screen' display - if on the other hand you are looking for the best rear camera and performance for your buck - look instead at the Poco F1, or the Redmi Note 7 Pro - and if you are looking for a high quality AMOLED display, look at the Samsung Galaxy A50
